Leukotrienes (LTs) are 5-lipoxygenase products formed from arachidonic acid metabolism. There is compelling evidence that LTs play an important role in the pathogenesis of asthma. LTs affect vascular permeability, mucus production, and smooth muscle constriction, and may contribute to airway remodeling.

Modified designs and modified computations
Computers & Structures, 1993This paper is concerned with computation schemes which can be used efficiently and economically to solve two-dimensional problems of elasticity for a series of successively modified versions of a design. Two computation schemes have been proposeed. The first is an exact one in the finite element sense, representing a generalization and development of ...

Modifiable automata self-modifying automata
Acta Biotheoretica, 1992One of the most important features of living beings that seems universal is perhaps their ability to be modified in a functional way. In order to modelize this characteristic, we designed automata with a finite number of instantaneous internal descriptions, with input(s) and output(s) and which are able to be functionally modified.

Late results of structural allografting of the acetabulum are quite variable. In order to reduce or avoid the necessity for bone grafting, some modified cups have been developed. The deep cup with or without a lateralized polyethylene liner reduces the problem of the protrusio socket.

Radiation therapy is one of the most commonly used treatments for cancer. Radiation modifiers are agents that alter tumor or normal tissue response to radiation, such as radiation sensitizers and radiation protectors. Radiation sensitizers target aspects of tumor molecular biology or physiology to enhance tumor cell killing after irradiation ...

An elegant set of mouse crosses has been used to identify a mitochondrial variant that interacts with a nuclear locus on chromosome 10, Ahl, to modify age-related hearing loss. This discovery sets the stage for the identification of factors that modify expression levels and variability of human hearing impairments.

Many different methods exist by which the radiosensitivity of cells, and hence of normal tissues and tumours, can be manipulated. Several of these can be traced to a common redox pathway involving competition between oxidising and reducing species. Others involve the biochemical enzyme systems required for removal of DNA lesions.

This paper presents a coupled, joint probabilistic data association (JPDA) algorithm for multi-target tracking using a modified version of the standard measurement-to-track assignment model. The mutually exclusive nature of standard JPDA association events precludes any measurement being associated with more than one target in a given event.

Various molecules which are similar to the natural nucleobases exist in nature or have been synthetically developed. In this chapter we review work on the photophysical properties of several modified nucleobases, focusing particularly on how these properties differ from those of the natural nucleobases.
