Modular multilevel converter (MMC) based resonant high voltage multiplier

2015 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE), 2015
This paper addresses the limitation of current technologies in the interconnection between medium-voltage (MV) DC and high-voltage (HV) DC grids. One transformerless approach is proposed to achieve bidirectional high power transfer and high step up/down ratio, which can be configured to interface with different grids connection. The proposed technology

Efficient Grounding for Modular Multilevel HVDC Converters (MMC) on the AC Side

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2014
An unbalance voltage between a positive pole and negative pole will exist for a long time in an ungrounded modular multilevel converter (MMC) HVDC transmission system. A zig-zag transformer has been proposed to construct an artificial neutral point and keep voltage balance between the positive pole and the negative pole.

Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) for Traction Applications Slides

2017
Since its initial conception, the transformer has been used in the most diverse applications where insulation and adaptation of voltage levels are demanded. In fact, this device is widely employed either directly or indirectly in all electric engineering fields due its simple design for distinct power and voltage conversion levels.

Reliability-oriented switching frequency analysis for Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC)

2015 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE), 2015
In this paper, reliability-oriented switching frequency analysis for Modular Multilevel Converter is investigated. In the medium voltage and high voltage direct current applications, the switching frequency should be low enough to avoid the converter from high switching power losses.

Systematic modeling and control of indirect modular multilevel converter (MMC) with grid unbalance estimation

IECON 2013 - 39th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, 2013
Modular multilevel converter (MMC) is considered as an idea and promising candidate for multilevel technology. By connecting two MMCs in back-to-back configuration with a DC transmission cable, a so-called indirect MMC can be constructed for high-voltage direct current transmission application.

A novel SVPWM technique for capacitor voltage balancing in modular multilevel converters(MMCs)

2017 11th IEEE International Conference on Compatibility, Power Electronics and Power Engineering (CPE-POWERENG), 2017
This paper proposes a novel space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) technique to address the capacitor voltage balancing issue in MMCs. The MMC topology consists of cascade connected identical and individual controllable submodules (SMs) to generate higher level output voltages.

A novel capacitor voltage balancing control strategy for modular multilevel converters (MMC)

2013 International Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems (ICEMS), 2013
Recently modular multilevel converters are highly attractive for medium, high-voltage power transition and electrical machine drive. Capacitor voltage sorting is very important for capacitor voltage-balancing control. This paper describes a novel sorting algorithm for capacitor voltage of modular multilevel converters (MMC).

An improved circuit topology of modular multilevel converter (MMC) for DC to AC applications

2016 IEEE International Conference on Power Electronics, Drives and Energy Systems (PEDES), 2016
This paper proposes a new circuit topology of MMC for DC to AC applications. The main advantage of the proposed topology is the elimination of lower arms of conventional MMC. Additionally, the DC bus voltage magnitude is half compared to conventional MMC. This is achieved by replacing the lower arms of conventional MMC topology with LC filter.
