Impact of Sustainable Binders Based on Lignin and Collagen on the Volume Stability and Mechanical Properties of MgO‐C Refractories with MgO‐C Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Collagen hydrolysate is evaluated as a sustainable binder for MgO‐C refractories. Its thermally induced cross‐linking and gas release lead to expansion and cracking in large bricks, but tailored batches with lignin, recyclates, or fine graphite improve the gas release while thermal treatment and stability.

Development of Sustainable MgO–C Refractories Using MgO–C Recyclates and a Novel Eco‐Friendly Fructose–Tannin Binder Crosslinked With Citric Acid

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study develops sustainable MgO–C refractories using recycled materials and eco‐friendly fructose–tannin binders. The enhanced performance of citric acid as a cross‐linker and functional additives on mechanical and thermomechanical properties was examined. Characterization included strength tests, immersion trials, and microstructural and inclusion

Mathematical and neural network modelling of terebinth fruit under fluidized bed drying

open access: yesResearch in Agricultural Engineering, 2015
The paper presents an application which uses Feed Forward Neural Networks (FFNNs) to model the non-linear behaviour of the terebinth fruit drying. Mathematical models and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) were used for prediction of effective moisture ...

Use of visible, near-infrared, and thermal infrared remote sensing to study soil moisture [PDF]

open access: yes
Two methods are described which are used to estimate soil moisture remotely using the 0.4- to 14.0 micron wavelength region: (1) measurement of spectral reflectance, and (2) measurement of soil temperature. The reflectance method is based on observations

Surface Tension Measurement of Ti‐6Al‐4V by Falling Droplet Method in Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In this article, the temperature‐dependent surface tension of free falling, oscillating Ti‐6Al‐4V droplets is investigated in both argon and monosilane doped, oxygen‐free atmosphere. Droplet temperature and oscillation are captured with one single high‐speed camera, and the surface tension is calculated with Rayleigh's formula.

Impact of Pre‐Oxidation Treatments on a Recycled MgO/Steel‐Composite as Carbon Free Anode in Aluminum‐Electrolysis Environments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Cermets (60 vol.% AISI 316L stainless steel, 40 vol.% recycled MgO), intended for use in aluminum electrolysis, were pre‐oxidized in three furnaces with different heating technologies and subjected to a cryolite corrosion test. The different atmospheres influenced the formation of oxide layers, which in turn affected corrosion resistance and ...

Evaluation of material properties determining the moisture transfer

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2013
Due to solution the problems of moisture transfer is necessary to deal with two mechanisms of transfer: the molecular mass transfer and mass transfer by convection.

Evaluation of semi-empirical and non-linear drying models by Bayesian inference

open access: yesActa Scientiarum: Technology, 2014
Current analysis investigates thin layer drying experiments on passion fruit seeds. Drying characteristics of passion fruit seeds were examined using ambient air for temperature range between 40 and 65ºC and air flow velocity range between 0.6 and 1.2 m ...
