Rotational excitation of CO molecules colliding at low energy with a cold graphite surface

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Context. The CO molecule is of interest in various environments because, being IR active, it is often used as a tracer of inactive IR molecules. This is particularly important in the interstellar medium, where CO is the most abundant molecule after H2 ...

Functional comparison of EncB and EncC cargo proteins in iron storage within the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Encapsulins are protein nanocompartments that play an important role in iron storage. In the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin system, two cargo proteins called EncB and EncC contribute to iron mineralization. Here, we show that EncB and EncC generate iron‐containing minerals with distinct chemical compositions, suggesting that the composition of stored ...

On the Origin of Sodium Atoms in the Comae and Trails of Comets

open access: yesUniverse
Background: The observed abundance ratios of alkali species in ground-based spectra of comets deviate from solar composition, suggesting alkali ejection from phenoxides reacting with carbon dioxide at the nucleus surface (alkali-phenoxide carbonylation).

Structural and biochemical analysis of a B12 superbinder

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
BtuG proteins are vitamin B12 scavengers in Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, a dominant human gut bacterium. We present crystal structures of three BtuG homologs bound to cobalamin and its precursor cobinamide, revealing picomolar binding affinities, among the highest known for any natural protein.

Multi‐Occupancy in CO2 Clathrate Hydrates: A Quantum Chemistry Study From Finite‐Size Cages to Crystals

open access: yesSmall Structures
This study presents a comprehensive quantum chemistry investigation of multiple CO2 encapsulation in clathrate hydrates, offering new insights into their potential for high‐capacity gas storage. Dispersion‐corrected density functional theory calculations

Observational evidence for a possible link between PAH emission and dust trap locations in protoplanetary disks

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Context. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are commonly detected in protoplanetary disks, but it is unclear what causes the wide range of intensities across the samples. Aims.

Structures of mycobacterial 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA carboxylase reveal carrier‐domain translocation between catalytic sites

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mycobacterial 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA carboxylase uses a mobile biotin‐carrying domain to shuttle a carboxyl group between two catalytic sites, enabling carboxylation of 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA during leucine breakdown. Cryo‐electron microscopy captures the carrier at both sites and reveals an inward loop movement that may prevent futile rebinding to the ...

The reaction of P+ with H2O (D2O): A pathway for the formation of PO and PO+ in the interstellar medium and circumstellar envelopes

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Context. Interstellar phosphorus shows uncertain depletion patterns and an unidentified main reservoir, with only a few P-bearing molecules detected despite their key astrochemical and astrobiological relevance.

From junk to function — How weak selection in eukaryotes builds new parts and drives genomic complexity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
How do genomes gain new functional parts? In eukaryotes, which tend to evolve under weak selection, much of the genome is junk. Palazzo and Qiu borrow the logic of Markov chains to show how non‐functional DNA becomes functional through the appearance of intermediate states, which arise due to epistasis, buffering, and biochemical messiness, allowing ...
