Moment tensor analysis of transversely isotropic shale based on the discrete element method

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mining Science and Technology, 2017
In this study, the moment tensor of transversely isotropic shale was analyzed using a discrete element method-acoustic emission model (DEM-AE model). Firstly, the failure modes of the shale obtained from the acoustic emission (AE) events and physical ...

Aftershock Moment Tensor Scattering

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2022
Abstract Coseismic rotations of principal stress axes can provide insights into the strength of the crust, but it is unclear how common this phenomenon is. We use a nearest‐neighbor clustering algorithm to identify earthquake sequences in the global ISC‐GEM catalog and the regional Southern California catalog.

Microscopic Failure Mechanism Analysis of Rock Under Dynamic Brazilian Test Based on Acoustic Emission and Moment Tensor Simulation

open access: yesFrontiers in Physics, 2021
The dynamic tensile failure of rock is a main failure mode in deep underground engineering projects. The microscopic failure mechanism analysis of this failure mode plays a key role in dynamic disaster warning.

Higher-rank tensor non-Abelian field theory: Higher-moment or subdimensional polynomial global symmetry, algebraic variety, Noether's theorem, and gauging

open access: yesPhysical Review Research, 2021
With a view toward a fracton theory in condensed matter, we introduce a higher-moment polynomial degree-p global symmetry, acting on complex scalar/vector/tensor fields (e.g., ordinary or vector global symmetry for p=0 and p=1 respectively).

Cooperative P-Wave Velocity Measurement with Full Waveform Moment Tensor Inversion in Transversely Anisotropic Media

open access: yesSensors, 2022
Precise stochastic approaches to quantitatively calculate the source uncertainties offers the opportunity to eliminate the influence of anisotropy on moment tensor inversion.

A Moment-Based Approach for Guaranteed Tensor Decomposition [PDF]

open access: yesICASSP 2020 - 2020 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP), 2020
This paper presents a new scheme to perform the canonical polyadic decomposition (CPD) of a symmetric tensor. We first formulate the CPD problem as a truncated moment problem , where a measure has to be recovered knowing some of its moments. The support of the measure is discrete and encodes the CPD.

Ambiguity of the Moment Tensor [PDF]

open access: yesBulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 2005
An earthquake on a fault separating two dissimilar materials does not have a well-defined moment density tensor. We present a complete characterization of this bimaterial ambiguity in the general case of slip on a fault in an anisotropic medium. The ambiguity can be eliminated by utilizing a potency density rather than a moment density representation ...

Local seismotectonic analysis of the July 2019 Molucca Sea earthquake sequence based on moment tensor solutions

open access: yesGeoscience Letters, 2021
We investigate the local seismotectonic of the Molucca Sea area using moment tensor calculations for the earthquakes that occurred in July 2019 at a depth of 10–55 km.

How to Assess the Moment Tensor Inversion Resolution for Mining Induced Seismicity: A Case Study for the Rudna Mine, Poland

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2021
Underground exploitation of georesources can be highly correlated with induced seismic activity. In order to reduce the risk and improve the mining operations safety, the mining activity is monitored by a dedicated seismic network.
