Antiglycation and Antioxidant Properties of Momordica charantia
The accumulation of advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) and oxidative stress underlie the pathogenesis of diabetic complications. In many developing countries, diabetes treatment is unaffordable, and plants such as bitter gourd (or bitter melon; Momordica charantia) are used as traditional remedies because they exhibit hypoglycaemic properties.

Summary Plant‐derived oils are essential sources of reduced carbon and various fatty acid (FA) structures for food, biofuels, and the oleochemical industry. Despite extensive efforts, engineering mainstream oilseed crops to produce high levels of industrially valuable unusual FAs (UFAs) remains challenging.

Reduced adiposity in bitter melon (Momordica charantia) fed rats is associated with lower tissue triglyceride and higher plasma catecholamines [PDF]
Slower weight gain and less visceral fat had been observed when rats fed a high-fat diet were supplemented with freeze-dried bitter melon (BM) juice; the metabolic consequences and possible mechanism(s) were further explored in the present study.
