The Distribution of Complement Proteins in Soft and Hard Coronas Impacts Macrophage Uptake of Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Protein corona plays a critical role in the biological behavior of nanoparticles. This study investigates the distribution of complement proteins in soft corona and their impact on the macrophage uptake of polymer nanoparticles. It underlines the significance of soft corona investigation for understanding in vivo performance of nanomedicines.

Early dynamic changes to monocytes following major surgery are associated with subsequent infections

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology
BackgroundPost-operative infections are a common cause of morbidity following major surgery. Little is understood about how major surgery perturbs immune function leading to heightened risk of subsequent infection.

Strontium‐Containing Bioactive Glass Nanoparticles Stimulate Osteogenesis and Suppress Osteoclast Formation in Co‐Culture

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Spherical bioactive glass nanoparticles containing strontium inhibit osteoclast differentiation and activity, but promote osteoblast activity in osteoblast‐osteoclast in vitro co‐culture. The nanoparticles could be used for the treatment of osteoporosis.

Hepatitis B surface antigen impairs TLR4 signaling by upregulating A20 expression in monocytes

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum
Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play a crucial role in eliminating viral infection. Conversely, viruses have evolved various strategies to disrupt TLR signaling during chronic infection.

Gentamicin‐Loaded Carbonate Apatite with Dual Antibacterial and Osteogenic Functions for Combating Surgical Site Infections

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A bone substitute with gentamicin physically precipitated onto the surface of carbonate apatite exhibits prompt drug release, high bactericidal activity, and osteogenic capacity. Efficient antibacterial activity mitigates early postoperative neutrophil accumulation, the status of which may serve as a potential parameter for evaluating the antibacterial
