Diversity of monogeneans in Southeast Asia
International Journal for Parasitology, 1998The diversity of monogeneans from Southeast Asia was examined using information from the literature to show their diversity at different taxonomic (subclass, family, genera, species) levels. Knowledge of monogeneans is still incomplete in Southeast Asia and the present numbers of monogeneans are likely an underestimate of what is present on/in aquatic ...

Sperm transfer in monogenean (platyhelminth) parasites
Acta Parasitologica, 2015AbstractThere are three major groups of parasitic platyhelminths (flatworms). The digeneans and cestodes are endoparasites, while the monogeneans are ectoparasites mostly on the gills or skin of fishes. Monogeneans are hermaphrodite and, with the exception of the gyrodactylids, mostly protandrous, the male reproductive system maturing before the female

Haemoglobin in a Monogenean, Oculotrema hippopotami
Nature, 1970Oculotrema hippopotami is a Polystomatid Monogenean that lives around the eye of the Hippopotamus. The anterior two-thirds of the body of mature worms is a dark red colour, while the posterior part, including the haptor, is almost colourless. Tests have shown that red colour is due to haemoglobin.

Publisher Summary This chapter illustrates the role of the eggs in the biology of monogenean parasites. The life cycles of monogeneans are relatively simple compared with those of other parasitic platyhelminths (cestodes and digeneans). Most monogeneans inhabit the skin and gills of fishes, and these sites are accessible to free-swimming larvae ...

Larvae and Larval Development of Monogeneans
1963Publisher Summary This chapter focusses on a group of parasitic platyhelminths generally referred to as monogenetic trematodes. A few monogeneans are viviparous and the newly-born young resemble the parents, but most are oviparous, and the newly hatched young is a larva and called an oncomiracidium.

Parasitology Research, 2008
Gyrodactylid monogeneans are considered to be the most invasive fish parasites. They are omnipresent on teleost fishes and host change might play a crucial role in their biology. In the present study, related fish species were kept in single- or mixed-species groups to test the ability of Gyrodactylus species to change their host fish under ...

Transmission of the monogenean Gyrodactylus salaris
Parasitology International, 1998The present study is focusing on the transmission of the monogenean ectoparasite Gyrodactylus salaris Malmberg, 1957, a major pathogen on natural populations of Norwegian Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L. In laboratory experiments the transmission rate of G.

Non-monophyly of the monogeneans?
International Journal for Parasitology, 1998There is currently no congruence between phylogenies based on morphology, in which the Monogenea are considered a monophylum, and molecular phylogenies based on 18S or 28S rDNA, in which the Monogenea are never considered monophyletic. However, all analyses based on morphology and sperm characters or molecular data found constantly the two subgroups ...

Monogenean neuromusculature: some structural and functional correlates
International Journal for Parasitology, 1998Monogenean neuromuscular systems are structurally and functionally well-differentiated, as evidenced by research on the fish-gill parasite, Diclidophora merlangi. The nervous system in the worm exhibits a raft of putative intercellular signalling molecules, localised in neuronal vesicles.

The influence of climate on the distribution of monogeneans of anurans in Nigeria
Journal of Helminthology, 2004AbstractInvestigations undertaken on the monogeneans of amphibians in Nigeria have shown that host ecology has an influence on the distribution of these monogeneans. Amphibians from humid environments of the rainforest, a freshwater swamp and mangrove harboured no monogeneans, whereas those occurring in drier conditions in the savannah-mosaic and ...
