The nutrition of the gill parasitic monogenean Pseudodactylogyrus anguillae
Parasitology Research, 1987A histological and histochemical study of ingested food material, energy stores and enzymes in the monogenean Pseudodactylogyrus anguillae, parasitizing the gills of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is presented. It was found that mucus, epithelial cells and blood from the gills were ingested.

Insemination of the monogenean Neobenedenia girellae (Capsalidae, Benedeniinae)
Parasitology International, 2014In vitro spermatophore formation and insemination of Neobenedenia girellae (Monogenea: Capsalidae, Benedeniinae) were recorded on video and described for the first time. Upon contact of two individuals, the anterior adhesive discs of the donor firmly attached to the dorsal tegument of the recipient and the donor's fore body strongly contracted such ...

Genome-wide identification of ABC transporters in monogeneans
Molecular and Biochemical Parasitology, 2019ATP-Binding Cassette (ABC) transporters are proteins that actively mediate the transport of a wide variety of molecules, including drugs. Thus, in parasitology, ABC transporters have gained attention as potential targets for therapeutic drugs. Among the parasitic Platyhelminthes, ABC transporters have been identified and classified in a few species of ...

Interactions between monogenean parasites and their fish hosts
International Journal for Parasitology, 2002Parasite factors associated with recognition and selection of the host and the mechanisms in the host responsible for acceptance or rejection of the invading organism were evaluated. Sensory structures in parasites are able to detect differences between different fish species and this ability to discern between fishes may be based on both chemical and ...

Dactylogyridean monogeneans of the siluriform fishes of the Old World
Systematic Parasitology, 2001This is a catalogue and discussion of the known dactylogyridean monogenean genera of siluriform fishes of the Old World. Of a total of 38 nominal genera, only 19 are considered valid. Seventeen of these 19 genera are currently in the Ancyrocephalidae (containing the Ancyrocephalinae and Ancylodiscoidinae), whilst the other two (Neocalceostoma and ...

Swimming in a sub-adult monogenean of the genus Entobdella
International Journal for Parasitology, 1991Swimming in a sub-adult monogenean parasite is reported for the first time. When detached from the substrate, a specimen of an undescribed species of Entobdella from the ventral skin surface of the cow-tailed ray, Dasyatis sephen, was found to propel itself vigorously through the water, head-first, by rapid dorso-ventral body undulations travelling in ...

Host specificity dynamics: observations on gyrodactylid monogeneans
International Journal for Parasitology, 2002The directly transmitted viviparous gyrodactylids have high species richness but low morphological and biological diversity, and many species are recorded from only a single host. They therefore constitute a guild of species ideal for studies of the evolutionary significance of host specificity.

The Biology of Gyrodactylid Monogeneans: The “Russian-Doll Killers”
2007This article reviews the history of gyrodactylid research focussing on the unique anatomy, behaviour, ecology and evolution of the viviparous forms while identifying gaps in our knowledge and directions for future research. We provide the first summary of research on the oviparous gyrodactylids from South American catfish, and highlight the ...
