At the Edge of Monstrosity: Melville, Shelley, and Crane’s Monsters in 19th-Century Literature [PDF]
What is a monster? For contemporary readers, monsters conjure images of things from horror films. My capstone addresses the question of whether monsters, the monstrous, and monstrosity are inside the human or elsewhere.

Vulnerabilities and responsibilities: dealing with monsters in computer security [PDF]
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyze information security assessment in terms of cultural categories and virtue ethics, in order to explain the cultural origin of certain types of security vulnerabilities, as well as to enable a proactive ...

From a database of 170 pentagonal 2D materials, 4 candidates exhibiting altermagnetic ordering are screened. Furthermore, the spin‐splitting and unconventional boundary states in the pentagonal 2D altermagnetic monolayer MnS2 are investigated. A MnS2‐based altermagnetic tunneling junction is designed and, through ab initio quantum transport simulations,

The (Mostly) Unseen World of Cryptids: Legendary Monsters in North America
North America is steeped in legends of cryptids, (mostly) unseen creatures woven into the fabric of its folklore. From legends told by early explorers to contemporary legends told today, these enigmatic beings shape societal perceptions and reflect ...

Electric control of magnetic tunnel junctions offers a path to drastically reduce the energy requirements of the device. Electric field control of magnetization can be realized in a multitude of ways. These mechanisms can be integrated into existing spintronic devices to further reduce the operational energy.

Other Ethics: Decentering the Human in Weird Horror
Margrit Shildrick has argued that the monster’s ability to disturb and unsettle arises from its position as simultaneously same and different, both self and other at the same time.

Large Anomalous and Topological Hall Effect and Nernst Effect in a Dirac Kagome Magnet Fe3Ge
Fe3Ge, a Kagome‐lattice magnet, exhibits remarkable anomalous Hall and Nernst effects, with transverse thermoelectric conductivity surpassing or comaprable to some well‐known ferromagnets. First‐principles calculations attribute these to Berry curvature from massive Dirac gaps. Additionally, topological Hall and Nernst signals emerge from field‐induced

Emergent Freestanding Complex Oxide Membranes for Multifunctional Applications
This review surveys freestanding oxide membranes and covers fabrication and three pathways for studies and devices: strain‐free and strained membranes, and van der Waals‐integrated heterostructures. We show how coupled oxide responses map onto these routes and cross‐couple to expand behaviors.

This study presents a novel mechanically responsive optical device that modulates light transmission and generates iridescent structural colors under reflection. The optical transition arises from the exposure of nanoparticles upon stretching, which are initially embedded beneath the surface.

Veech groups of Loch Ness monsters
We classify Veech groups of tame non-compact flat surfaces. In particular we prove that all countable subgroups of $\mathbf{GL}_+(2,\R)$ avoiding the set of mappings of norm less than 1 appear as Veech groups of tame non-compact flat surfaces which are ...
