Aeroacoustic and aerodynamic characteristics of a morphing airfoil

Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology, 2021
Purpose This paper aims to assess the aeroacoustic and aerodynamic performance of a morphing airfoil with a flexible trailing edge (FTE). The objective is to make a comparison of the aerodynamic noise characteristics between the conventional airfoil with a flap and morphing airfoil and analyse the noise reduction mechanisms of the morphing airfoil ...

Design of a Morphing Airfoil with Composite Chiral Structure

open access: yesJournal of Aircraft, 2012
The paper presents a design study for a morphing structural concept, which could be used to obtain a passively actuated high-lift wing configuration. A composite chiral honeycomb core is used to allow large variations of camber at limited strain levels in the structure of the aerodynamic surface.

Concepts for morphing airfoil sections using bi-stable laminated composite structures

open access: yesThin-Walled Structures, 2008
The present paper investigates the potential of using bi-stable laminated composite structures for morphing an airfoil section. The objective of the paper is to identify geometries and lay-ups of candidate configurations that offer multiple stable shapes

Morphing Airfoils with Four Morphing Parameters

AIAA Guidance, Navigation and Control Conference and Exhibit, 2008
An episodic unsupervised learning simulation using the Q-Learning method is developed to learn the optimal shape and shape change policy for a problem with four state variables. Optimality is addressed by reward functions based on airfoil properties such as lift coecient, drag coecient, and moment coecient about the leading edge representing optimal ...

Design and control of tensegrity morphing airfoils

Mechanics Research Communications, 2020
Abstract We present a general approach of design, dynamics, and control for tensegrity morphing airfoils. Firstly, based on reduced order Class-k tensegrity dynamics, a shape control law for tensegrity systems is derived. Then, we develop a method for discretizing continuous airfoil curves based on shape accuracy.
