Numerical and Experimental Investigation and Optimization of a Morphing Airfoil

13th AIAA/ISSMO Multidisciplinary Analysis Optimization Conference, 2010
The recent developments in smart material technologies generated several researches involving their application in the aeronautical field. New methods for geometry variation have been developed as a superior means of aircraft adaptation. The morphing concept is not recent, since several ways of adapting wings have been incorporated during the past few ...

Airfoil morphing based on SMA actuation technology

Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology, 2014
Purpose – This study aims to develop an innovative actuator for improving the performance of future aircraft, by adapting the airfoil shape according to the flight conditions. The flap’s camber of a civil regional transportation aircraft’s trailing edge actuated and morphed with the use of shape memory alloys (SMA) actuator technology, instead of the ...

Camber Controlled Airfoil Design for Morphing UAV

47th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting including The New Horizons Forum and Aerospace Exposition, 2009
Morphing technology, inspired by bat and bird flight, can enable an aircraft to adapt its shape to best suit the flight condition thereby enhancing mission performance. In this paper, we propose a camber change for the morphing of airfoils with the aim of improving aerodynamic efficiency.

About the design of morphing airfoils under uncertainties

PAMM, 2015
AbstractThe paper presents an optimization framework for dealing with morphing airfoils for helicopter rotor blades. With regard to the morphing strategy, a conformable camber line is considered to deal with variable flow conditions encountered in forward flight with the objective of increasing the aerodynamic performance on the advancing and ...

Research on the Aerodynamic Characteristics of Morphing Supercritical Airfoil

2019
Morphing vehicle would change aerodynamic configuration in real time with the flight condition changing to keep the best performance in the whole flight envelope, which would result in strong flow unsteadiness and the response problem between flow and the airframe.

A Single Actuator Mechanism for Airfoil Shape Morphing

Volume 5B: 42nd Mechanisms and Robotics Conference, 2018
Presented in this paper is a single actuator mechanism for airfoil shape morphing. The said mechanism is designed as a linkage array that is driven by one actuator to provide multiple output points along the entire airfoil shape. This mechanism consists of two components, namely the shape adaptation linkage (SAL) and the connector linkage.

Shape Memory Alloy Morphing Airfoil Sections

Advances in Science and Technology, 2016
Shape memory alloys (SMA) provide common solid state actuators with reliable and unique characteristics. Their special behavior is based on a reversible phase transformation and can provide high power density, induced strain and block force which render them indispensable for use in morphing structures that require large shape changes while space and ...

Aerodynamic benefits of flexible morphing airfoil for SUAV

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2019
This work is conducted to study the aerodynamic benefits of the flexible morphing airfoil for small unmanned aerial vehicles. The flexible airfoil is divided along its chord and modelled as two cantilever beams. Fluid-structure simulation is conducted to morph the camber of the flexible airfoil and to generate the morphed airfoil geometries.
