Robust control of a morphing airfoil structure

Proceedings of the 2005, American Control Conference, 2005., 2005
This paper presents several robust control designs for a MIMO morphing airfoil concept. A linear aeroelastic model of the morphing wing is utilized to design an H/sub /spl infin// controller and a two degree of freedom H/sub /spl infin// loop shaping controller that track commanded lift and roll moments.

A hybrid morphing NACA4412 airfoil concept

2015 IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology (ICIT), 2015
This paper details the design and development of a hybrid actuator system combining surface actuated Shape memory alloys (SMAs) and trailing-edge Macro fibre composites (MFCs) for a NACA 4412 airfoil. This design allows both for a high-frequent (≈ 100 Hz) low-displacement actuation as well as a low-frequent large-displacement actuation.

Passive Morphing Airfoil With Honeycombs

Volume 1: Advances in Aerospace Technology; Energy Water Nexus; Globalization of Engineering; Posters, 2011
A passive morphing may improve the aerodynamic characteristics through structural shape change by aerodynamic loads during the flight, resulting in improving fuel efficiency. The passive morphing structure should have a capability to be highly deformed while maintaining a sufficient stiffness in bending.

Modeling and Control of a Morphing Airfoil

Dynamic Systems and Control, Volumes 1 and 2, 2003
This paper presents aeroelastic modelling and robust control design for a morphing airfoil concept. A finite dimensional linear time invariant aeroelastic model is developed for a multi-input multi-output morphing airfoil structure. The shape of the airfoil (NACA airfoil series 2415) is controlled by actuators distributed along the top airfoil surface ...

Application of morphing technique to airfoil design

2012 Oceans - Yeosu, 2012
Airfoil is a cross section of a wing or blade and can be represented by polygonal lines. Although drawing an airfoil shape is an easy matter, selecting a right shape fit for the purpose is not. The shape of the airfoil profile is a key factor for good performance of the turbines, making it essential to optimise the airfoil for a maximum lift with a ...

A Novel SMA-based Concept for Airfoil Structural Morphing

Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance, 2009
The adaptive structures concept is of great interest in the aerospace field because of the several benefits which can be accomplished in the fields including noise reduction, load alleviation, weight reduction, etc., at a level in which they can be considered as compulsory in the design of future aircraft.

Reinforcement Learning of Morphing Airfoils with Aerodynamic and Structural Effects

Journal of Aerospace Computing, Information, and Communication, 2007
This paper applies a Reinforcement Learning methodology to the problem of airfoil morphing. The reinforcement learning as it is applied to morphing is integrated with a computational model of an airfoil. The computational model utilizes a doublet panel method whose end yield is airfoil lift, drag, and moment coecients.

Smart material actuators for airfoil morphing applications

SPIE Proceedings, 2004
This paper outlines the testing of a piezoelectric ultrasonic motor (PUSM). The authors propose the use of a pseudoelastic NiTi thin film layer to replace the traditional fiber reinforced polymer contact layer. In accordance with this goal, a literature review of reported accomplishments in the area of the tribology of NiTi, both shape memory and ...

Concept for morphing airfoil with zero torsional stiffness

Thin-Walled Structures, 2015
A morphing wing structure is presented which is designed to have zero torsional stiffness to minimise actuation requirements. The concept consists of carbon fibre reinforced plastic strips which are initially curved prior to being flattened and assembled into a grid-like structure in a heightened state of elastic strain energy.

Morphing Airfoil with Thermally Activated SMA Actuators

ISSS Journal of Micro and Smart Systems, 2017
In this paper we study a type of design of Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) wire actuated morphing airfoil having discontinuous skin by targeting trailing edge deflection and changing camber. The design aims at airfoils to have optimal directional stiffness and relaxed shear constraint to allow the required change to create a conformal target shape.
