Optimization and design of an aircraft’s morphing wing-tip demonstrator for drag reduction at low speed, Part I – Aerodynamic optimization using genetic, bee colony and gradient descent algorithms [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
In this paper, an ‘in-house’ genetic algorithm is described and applied to an optimization problem for improving the aerodynamic performances of an aircraft wing tip through upper surface morphing.

Digital Actuation Control of Soft Robotic Origami With Self‐Folding Liquid Crystal Elastomer Hinges

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Self‐folding soft‐rigid hybrid robotic origami is enabled by liquid crystal elastomer actuators with embedded Joule heating and closed‐loop digital control. Digitally addressable hinges provide reversible and programmable transitions between distinct folded states while maintaining actuation performance at high cycle counts (over 1500).

Resilient drones with morphing wings

open access: yes, 2023
Winged aerial robots and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) commonly referred to as winged drones and drones, are increasingly used in a wide range of professional and non-professional applications today, spanning from civilian to military. As a result, they have to operate in diverse and challenging environments throughout their mission.

Aeroelasticity of compliant span morphing wings [PDF]

open access: yesSmart Materials and Structures, 2018
A low-fidelity aeroelastic model is developed to study the dynamic behaviour of uniform, cantilever span morphing wings. The wing structure is modelled using the shape functions of the bending and torsional modes of a uniform cantilever wing according to the Rayleigh–Ritz method. Theodorsen's unsteady aerodynamic theory is used to model the aerodynamic

Unsteady Lifting-Line Free-Wake Aerodynamic Modeling for Morphing Wings

open access: yesAerospace
A time-stepping, lifting-line solution algorithm for the prediction of the unsteady aerodynamics of morphing wings is presented. The velocity induced by the wake vorticity is determined through a free-wake vortex-lattice model, whereas the Küssner and ...

A High-Lift Optimization Methodology for the Design of Leading and Trailing Edges on Morphing Wings

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2021
Morphing offers an attractive alternative compared to conventional hinged, multi-element high lift devices. In the present work, morphed shapes of a NACA 64A010 airfoil are optimized for maximum lift characteristics.

In-situ boundary layer transition detection on multi-segmental (a)synchronous morphing wings

open access: yesMeasurement: Sensors, 2021
This paper presents an experimental method to detect in-situ the location of transition on a multi-segmental trailing edge camber morphing wing during synchronous and asynchronous morphing.
