Thin-Film Metamaterials called Sculptured Thin Films

open access: yes, 2010
Morphology and performance are conjointed attributes of metamaterials, of which sculptured thin films (STFs) are examples. STFs are assemblies of nanowires that can be fabricated from many different materials, typically via physical vapor deposition onto

Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Skyrmion morphology in ultrathin magnetic films [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Nitrogen-vacancy magnetic microscopy is employed in quenching mode as a non-invasive, high resolution tool to investigate the morphology of isolated skyrmions in ultrathin magnetic films.

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

SDSS superclusters: morphology and galaxy content

open access: yes, 2014
We compare the galaxy populations in superclusters of different morphology in the nearby Universe (180 < d < 270 Mpc) to see whether the inner structure and overall morphology of superclusters are important in shaping galaxy properties in superclusters ...

Phase separation processes in polymer solutions in relation to membrane formation [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
This review covers new experimental and theoretical physical research related to the formation of polymeric membranes by phase separation of a polymer solution, and to the morphology of these membranes.

Morphological snakes

open access: yes2010 IEEE Computer Society Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, 2010
We introduce a morphological approach to curve evolution. The differential operators used in the standard PDE snake models can be approached using morphological operations on a binary level set. By combining the morphological operators associated to the PDE components we achieve a new snakes evolution algorithm.

A Cre‐dependent lentiviral vector for neuron subtype‐specific expression of large proteins

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We designed a versatile and modular lentivector comprising a Cre‐dependent switch and self‐cleaving 2A peptide and tested it for co‐expression of GFP and a 2.8 kb gene of interest (GOI) in mouse cortical parvalbumin (PV+) interneurons and midbrain dopamine (TH+) neurons.

Functional morphology of the blood-brain barrier in health and disease

open access: yesActa Neuropathologica, 2018
The adult quiescent blood–brain barrier (BBB), a structure organised by endothelial cells through interactions with pericytes, astrocytes, neurons and microglia in the neurovascular unit, is highly regulated but fragile at the same time.

Periodontal disease and osteoporosis association and mechanisms: A review of the literature

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Oral Sciences, 2015
Periodontitis and osteoporosis, diseases that affect millions of people in world, present bone loss as common hallmark. Prevalence of both osteoporosis and tooth loss increase with advancing age in both women and men. Systemic bone loss has been proposed
