Identification of nurseries areas of juvenile Prochilodus lineatus (Valenciennes, 1836) (Characiformes: Prochilodontidae) by scale and otolith morphometry and microchemistry

open access: yesNeotropical Ichthyology
The streaked prochilod Prochilodus lineatus (Valenciennes) is a commercially freshwater species from South America, distributed in the Plata basin. In the present work the morphometry (circularity, rectangularity, form factor, OL/OW and ellipticity ...

The complexity of dementia development and its comorbidities: The collaborative cross‐mouse population for multivarious tasks approach

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
The increasing prevalence of dementia and related neurodegenerative diseases—including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis—poses a growing public health challenge. These conditions have traditionally been studied as isolated central nervous system disorders, but emerging evidence points to ...

Diagnosing space telescope misalignment and jitter using stellar images [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Accurate knowledge of the telescope's point spread function (PSF) is essential for the weak gravitational lensing measurements that hold great promise for cosmological constraints. For space telescopes, the PSF may vary with time due to thermal drifts in

Disease Progression in Multiple System Atrophy: The ASPIRE Multi‐Modal Biomarker Study

open access: yesAnnals of Neurology, EarlyView.
Objective The objective of this study was to characterize changes in candidate biomarkers in early multiple system atrophy (MSA) and identify baseline predictors of faster progression. Methods This 1‐year, multicenter, prospective study assessed clinical, neuroimaging (3T‐magnetic resonance imaging [MRI], dopamine transporter single‐photon emission ...

Bariatric surgery and brain health: A longitudinal observational study investigating the effect of surgery on cognitive function and gray matter volume [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Dietary modifications leading to weight loss have been suggested as a means to improve brain health. In morbid obesity, bariatric surgery (BARS)—including different procedures, such as vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), gastric banding (GB), or Roux-en-Y

Morphometry of human leukocytes [PDF]

open access: yesBlood, 1980
Abstract In order to establish quantitative models of leukocyte functions, several morphometric parameters on individual white cells are needed. These include the diameter, volume, and membrane area of the cells and their nuclei in the undeformed state.

Back Again to the Future: A New Era for Cerebroprotection

open access: yesAnnals of Neurology, EarlyView.
Cerebroprotection is a fresh framework for designing neurological therapy that targets glia and vascular cells, in addition to neurons. In the future, successful cerebroprotection will involve targeting all elements of the neurovascular unit. Preclinical trials must include functional outcomes, as well as lesion morphometry.
