Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.

Risk Stratification for Postoperative Mortality in Cardiac Surgery: “Quo Vadis”?

open access: yesMedicina
Risk assessment for immediate mortality is a vital component of the preoperative assessment in elective cardiac surgeries of the adult population. It is generally used to inform consent and plan postoperative care, but can also help identify patients who

Risk Prediction Models for Recurrence After Curative Treatment of Early‐Stage or Locally Advanced Lung Cancer: A Systematic Review

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
This systematic review synthesizes prognostic models for survival and recurrence in resected non‐small cell lung cancer. While many models demonstrate moderate to good discrimination, few are externally validated and reporting quality is variable, limiting clinical applicability and highlighting the need for robust, transparent model development ...

Individual and joint effects of overweight/obesity and the triglyceride−glucose index on mortality risk in type 2 diabetic patients: a retrospective cohort study in China

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology
BackgroundThe global prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has risen significantly since 1990, contributing substantially to mortality and posing a major public health challenge. While overweight/obesity and insulin resistance, commonly reflected

Spinal Cord Infarction Versus Idiopathic Transverse Myelitis: Clinical, Radiological, and Functional Insights From a Retrospective Cohort Study

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Spinal cord infarction (SCI) is a rare but devastating myelopathy, characterized by a high disability rate and an unfavorable prognosis. It has often been underdiagnosed and misdiagnosed as idiopathic transverse myelitis (ITM). This study aimed to describe the clinical features, radiological biomarkers, treatments, and functional ...

Using spatio-temporal clustering to identify mortality patterns and anthropogenic drivers in the marine otter (Lontra felina) in north-central Chile

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
IntroductionSmall marine carnivores inhabiting fragmented rocky coastlines are increasingly exposed to anthropogenic pressures, yet mortality drivers in these systems remain poorly quantified.MethodsWe analyzed 22 years of carcass records (2003–2024) and

Impact of Asymptomatic Intracranial Hemorrhage on Outcome After Endovascular Stroke Treatment

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Endovascular treatment (EVT) achieves high rates of recanalization in acute large‐vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke, but functional recovery remains heterogeneous. While symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH) has been well studied, the prognostic impact of asymptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (aICH) after EVT is less certain ...

Validity of a Wearable Digital Insole for Assessing Gait ON and OFF in Parkinson's Disease

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Gait impairment is a distinctive symptom of Parkinson's disease that negatively impact mobility. We assessed the validity of wearable digital insoles against a validated reference gait analysis system for measuring select gait characteristics in patients with Parkinson's disease. Methods A comparative analysis between digital insoles
