Not all mosquitoes are created equal: A synthesis of vector competence experiments reinforces virus associations of Australian mosquitoes.

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2022
The globalization of mosquito-borne arboviral diseases has placed more than half of the human population at risk. Understanding arbovirus ecology, including the role individual mosquito species play in virus transmission cycles, is critical for limiting ...

Anopheles squamosus (Theobald, 1901) (Insecta: Diptera: Culicidae: Culicinae)

open access: yesEDIS
The genus Anopheles, the marsh mosquitoes, comprises approximately 500 species, only a few of which are capable of transmitting malaria parasites.

Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization--time of flight mass spectrometry: an emerging tool for the rapid identification of mosquito vectors. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
BACKGROUND: The identification of mosquito vectors is typically based on morphological characteristics using morphological keys of determination, which requires entomological expertise and training.

Juvenile Hormone-Sensitive Ribosomal Activity Enhances Viral Replication in Aedes aegypti

open access: yesmSystems, 2021
Most flaviviruses are transmitted between hosts by arthropod vectors such as mosquitoes. Since therapeutics or vaccines are lacking for most mosquito-borne diseases, reducing the mosquito vector competence is an effective way to decrease disease burden.

Enzymatic Basis for the Oxidative Branch of Aromatic Amino Acid Fermentation Leading to p‐cresol Formation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In anaerobic bacteria, tyrosine serves as an electron donor in the oxidative Stickland fermentation branch, generating p‐hydroxyphenylacetate, ATP and reduced ferredoxin for decarboxylation into p‐cresol. ABSTRACT The phenolic metabolite p‐cresol is a byproduct of tyrosine fermentation by certain strictly anaerobic bacteria, including the human gut ...

Microbial Odorant Detection Guides Drosophila Parasitoids Seeking Hosts in Fermenting Fruits

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Yeast microbes in fermenting fruits attract both host flies and their parasitoid wasps. Female Leptopilina boulardi detect yeast‐emitted ethyl esters via two olfactory receptors, LbouOR167 and LbouOR136. A conserved residue, Leu159, is critical for binding these compounds, enabling female wasps to locate host‐rich habitats.

Decoding the Mechanism of Action of a Parasite TGFβ Antagonist Inspires the Creation of Cell‐Type‐Specific TGFβ Modulators

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The mammalian TGFβ interacts with ubiquitously expressed TGFBR1 and TGFBR2, and current TGFβ‐targeting agents are non‐cell‐selective. The cooperative interaction of the modular parasite TGFβ antagonist with multiple host (co‐)receptors empowers the design of TGM chimeras and bispecific antibodies that activate or inhibit TGFβ signaling in a cell ...

Effect of Serotype and Strain Diversity on Dengue Virus Replication in Australian Mosquito Vectors

open access: yesPathogens, 2020
Dengue virus (DENV) is the most important mosquito-borne viral pathogen of humans, comprising four serotypes (DENV-1 to -4) with a myriad of genotypes and strains.

The toolbox for mosquito vector research

open access: yesParasites & Vectors
Abstract The work of collecting mosquitoes in the field is essential for improving knowledge about species of known and unknown vector status, their invasion dynamics, and further understanding their involvement in circulating pathogens of medical and veterinary importance.
