Sensory reception is an attribute of both primary cilia and motile cilia [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Cell Science, 2010
A recent cluster of papers has shown that motile cilia in the respiratory and reproductive tracts of humans and other mammals can exhibit sensory functions, a function previously attributed primarily to non-motile primary cilia. This leads to a new paradigm that all cilia and flagella (both motile and primary) can mediate sensory functions.

Rethinking the cilia hypothesis of hydrocephalus

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease, 2022
Dysfunction of motile cilia in ependymal cells has been proposed to be a pathogenic cause of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) overaccumulation leading to ventricular expansion in hydrocephalus, primarily based on observations of enlarged ventricles in mouse ...

Signaling the differences between cilia

open access: yeseLife, 2015
Calcium ion channels that determine many of the properties of cilia are different in motile cilia as compared to primary cilia and flagella.

Cilia at the node of mouse embryos sense fluid flow for left-right determination via Pkd2 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Unidirectional fluid flow plays an essential role in the breaking of left-right (L-R) symmetry in mouse embryos, but it has remained unclear how the flow is sensed by the embryo.

Assessment of liquid media requirements for storing and evaluating respiratory cilia motility [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ
Mucociliary clearance is critical for maintaining normal lung function. Respiratory cilia which drive mucociliary clearance are commonly studied by measuring cilia beat frequency (CBF).

Diagnostics and Management of Male Infertility in Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia

open access: yesDiagnostics, 2021
Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), a disease caused by the malfunction of motile cilia, manifests mainly with chronic recurrent respiratory infections. In men, PCD is also often associated with infertility due to immotile sperm.

Motile cilia of the male reproductive system require miR-34/miR-449 for development and function to generate luminal turbulence

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 2019
Significance Motile cilia are found lining the respiratory and reproductive systems, as well as the brain and spinal column, and the coordinated beat moves fluids over the luminal surfaces.

The evolutionary conserved FOXJ1 target gene Fam183b is essential for motile cilia in Xenopus but dispensable for ciliary function in mice

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2018
The transcription factor FOXJ1 is essential for the formation of motile cilia throughout the animal kingdom. Target genes therefore likely constitute an important part of the motile cilia program.

SARS-CoV-2 infection induces the dedifferentiation of multiciliated cells and impairs mucociliary clearance

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
SARS-CoV-2 infection damages the airways. Here the authors show that SARS-CoV-2 infection induces the rapid loss of airway motile cilia, resulting in altered cilia clearance function.

Effects of Sesquiterpene Lactones on Primary Cilia Formation (Ciliogenesis)

open access: yesToxins, 2023
Sesquiterpene lactones (SLs), plant-derived metabolites with broad spectra of biological effects, including anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory, hold promise for drug development.
