Transmembrane assemblage of the photoreceptor connecting cilium and motile cilium transition zone contain a common immunologic epitope

open access: closedCell Motility, 1990
AbstractThe photoreceptor connecting cilium bears a unique transmembrane assemblage which stably links cell surface glycoconjugates with the underlying axonemal cytoskeleton. Structural similarities between the photoreceptor connecting cilium and the transition zone of motile cilia suggests that this assemblage may also be present in motile cilia ...

Structural Similarities Between Kinocilium of Vestibular Hair Cell and Tracheal Motile Cilium in the Guinea Pig

open access: closedAuris Nasus Larynx, 1986
A rapid-freeze, deep-etch method was used to visualize the membrane characteristics as well as the three-dimensional ultrastructural features of a kinocilium of the guinea pig vestibular hair cell. A kinocilium of the vestibular hair cell had a typical ciliary necklace, consisting of six to seven parallel intramembrane particle arrays.

The sensory cilium of retinal rods is analogous to the transitional zone of motile cilia

open access: closedCell and Tissue Research, 1975
The connecting cilium of rat retinal rods was studied by freeze-fracture and thin-sectioning techniques. Transverse strands of intramembranous particles could be observed on fracture face B on the ciliary plasma membrane. The strands were essentially similar to those found at the transitional zone of motile cilia ("ciliary necklace"). The larger number

Observations on the solitary cilium of rabbit oviductal epithelium: Its motility and ultrastructure

American Journal of Anatomy, 1985
AbstractSolitary cilia have been observed on rabbit oviductal epithelial cells. In tissue cultures of fimbrial epithelium of 3‐ and 4‐day‐old animals observed by phase microscopy, most of these single cilia exhibited a vortical or funnel‐type movement while others had the usual to‐and‐fro motility.

The establishment of rotational polarity in the airway and ependymal cilia: analysis with a novel cilium motility mutant mouse

American Journal of Physiology-Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology, 2013
The airway is covered by multicilia that beat in a metachronous manner toward the mouth to eliminate debris and infectious particles. Coordinated one-directional beating is an essential feature of multicilia in the airway to guarantee proper mucociliary clearance.

Studies on cilia. 3. Further studies on the cilium tip and a "sliding filament" model of ciliary motility.

The Journal of cell biology, 1968
This study confirms and extends previous work on the lateral cilia of the fresh-water mussel, Elliptio complanatus, in support of a "sliding filament" mechanism of ciliary motility wherein peripheral filaments (microtubules) do not change length during beat (see Satir, 1967).
