Serotonergic and noradrenergic contributions to human motor cortical and spinal motoneuronal excitability [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Animal models indicate that motor behaviour is shaped by monoamine neurotransmitters released diffusely throughout the brain and spinal cord. We present strong evidence that human motor pathways are equally affected by neuromodulation through noradrenergic and serotonergic projections arising from the brainstem.

Motor Cortex Stimulation [PDF]

open access: yesPain Medicine, 2006
Motor cortex stimulation represents a paradigm shift in our understanding of the options available for treatment of both motor and somatosensory syndromes including central and neuropathic pain, weakness after stroke, Parkinson's disease, and tinnitus.

Cholecystokinin facilitates motor skill learning by modulating neuroplasticity in the motor cortex

open access: yeseLife
Cholecystokinin (CCK) is an essential modulator for neuroplasticity in sensory and emotional domains. Here, we investigated the role of CCK in motor learning using a single pellet reaching task in mice.

The pernicious danger of cortical brain maps [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
The parcellation of the primate cerebral cortex into numbered regions, based on cytoarchitecture, began with the pioneering research of neuroanatomist Kobrinian Brodmann. While the borders between regions have changed somewhat, and in some cases continue to be disputed, the idea of dividing the cortex into distinct numbered areas has become central to ...

Monoaminergic Modulation of Motor Cortex Function

open access: yesFrontiers in Neural Circuits, 2017
Elaboration of appropriate responses to behavioral situations rests on the ability of selecting appropriate motor outcomes in accordance to specific environmental inputs.

Iron overload in the motor cortex induces neuronal ferroptosis following spinal cord injury

open access: yesRedox Biology, 2021
Motor neuron death is supposed to result in primary motor cortex atrophy after spinal cord injury (SCI), which is relevant to poorer motor recovery for patients with SCI. However, the exact mechanisms of motor neuron death remain elusive.

Iron accumulation in deep cortical layers accounts for MRI signal abnormalities in ALS: correlating 7 tesla MRI and pathology. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cortical and spinal motor neuron dysfunction. Routine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies have previously shown hypointense signal in the motor cortex ...

Modified constraint-induced movement therapy enhances cortical plasticity in a rat model of traumatic brain injury: a resting-state functional MRI study

open access: yesNeural Regeneration Research, 2023
Modified constraint-induced movement therapy (mCIMT) has shown beneficial effects on motor function improvement after brain injury, but the exact mechanism remains unclear.

A viscous active shell theory of the cell cortex [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
The cell cortex is a thin layer beneath the plasma membrane that gives animal cells mechanical resistance and drives most of their shape changes, from migration, division to multicellular morphogenesis. It is mainly composed of actin filaments, actin binding proteins, and myosin molecular motors.

Causal relationships between brain and spinal motor neuron excitability during motor imagery: Using NIRS and evoked electromyogram study

open access: yesNeuroImage: Reports, 2022
In this study, we elucidated the neural basis of motor imagery by using a powerful statistical method in addition to simultaneous brain and spinal measurements using NIRS and evoked electromyogram.
