Calcitonin gene-related peptide expression levels predict motor neuron vulnerability in the superoxide dismutase 1-G93A mouse model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease, 2012
In amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) some motor neurons degenerate while others survive. The molecular mechanisms underlying this selective vulnerability and resistance, respectively, are poorly understood.

Intracranial Transplant of Olfactory Ensheathing Cells Can Protect Both Upper and Lower Motor Neurons in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

open access: yesCell Transplantation, 2013
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that involves the degeneration of cortical and spinal motor neurons. Mutant SOD1 G93A rats constitute a good animal model for this pathological condition.

The Spinobulbar System in Lamprey [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Locomotor networks in the spinal cord are controlled by descending systems which in turn receive feedback signals from ascending systems about the state of the locomotor networks.

Neurons, Networks, and Motor Behavior [PDF]

open access: yesNeuron, 1996
The field of motor pattern generation and motor control has progressed markedly in the last decade. There has been a revolutionary shift in thinking from hard-wired circuits to multifunctional networks. Yet, it is clear that we still have a long way to go before we understand how very large ensembles of neurons produce behaviors.

Knockout of the mitoribosome rescue factors Ict1 or Mtrfr is viable in zebrafish but not mice: compensatory mechanisms underlying each factor's loss

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Mitochondria contain two mitoribosome rescue factors, ICT1 and MTRFR (C12orf65). ICT1 also functions as a mitoribosomal protein in mice and humans, and its loss is lethal. Although Mtrfr knockout mice could not be generated, knockout zebrafish lines for ict1 and mtrfr were established.

Aberrant axon initial segment plasticity and intrinsic excitability of ALS hiPSC motor neurons

open access: yesCell Reports, 2023
Summary: Dysregulated neuronal excitability is a hallmark of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). We sought to investigate how functional changes to the axon initial segment (AIS), the site of action potential generation, could impact neuronal ...

The role of the innate immune system in ALS

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2012
ALS is a fatal, adult-onset neurodegenerative disease which is characterized by the death of upper and lower motor neurons. Recent studies have made clear that although motor neurons are the primary targets of the degenerative process, other cell types ...

Identification of early gene expression changes in primary cultured neurons treated with topoisomerase I poisons. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Topoisomerase 1 (TOP1) poisons like camptothecin (CPT) are currently used in cancer chemotherapy but these compounds can have damaging, off-target effects on neurons leading to cognitive, sensory and motor deficits.

Current trends in single‐cell RNA sequencing applications in diabetes mellitus

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Single‐cell RNA sequencing is a powerful approach to decipher the cellular and molecular landscape at a single‐cell resolution. The rapid development of this technology has led to a wide range of applications, including the detection of cellular and molecular mechanisms and the identification and introduction of novel potential diagnostic and ...

Neural Representations of Courtship Song in the Drosophila Brain [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Acoustic communication in drosophilid flies is based on the production and perception of courtship songs, which facilitate mating. Despite decades of research on courtship songs and behavior in Drosophila, central auditory responses have remained ...
