Motor planning and sparse motor command representation

Neurocomputing, 2007
The present article proposes a novel computational approach to the motor planning. In this approach, each motor command is represented as a linear combination of prefixed basis patterns, and the command for a given task is designed by minimizing a two-termed criterion consisting of a task optimization term and a parameter preference (i.e., sparseness ...

Neural Algorithms and Circuits for Motor Planning

Annual Review of Neuroscience, 2022
The brain plans and executes volitional movements. The underlying patterns of neural population activity have been explored in the context of movements of the eyes, limbs, tongue, and head in nonhuman primates and rodents. How do networks of neurons produce the slow neural dynamics that prepare specific movements and the fast dynamics that ultimately ...

A motor cortex circuit for motor planning and movement

Nature, 2015
Activity in motor cortex predicts specific movements seconds before they occur, but how this preparatory activity relates to upcoming movements is obscure. We dissected the conversion of preparatory activity to movement within a structured motor cortex circuit.

Motor planning in Parkinson patients

Neuropsychologia, 1983
This study was designed to determine if Parkinsonian patients exhibited a deficit in motor planning. Thirty adult males, 15 with Parkinson's disease and 15 normal controls, were given a gestural test which had two components. The first component required the symbolic representation of implement usage on verbal command and on imitation (representational

THE DESIGN PLAN OF KINESIN MOTORS

Annual Review of Cell and Developmental Biology, 1997
▪ Abstract  The kinesin superfamily comprises a large and structurally diverse group of microtubule-based motor proteins that produce a variety of force-generating activities within cells. This review addresses how the structures of kinesin proteins provide clues as to their biological functions and motile properties.

Developing motor planning over ages

Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 2010
Few studies have explored the development of response selection processes in children in the case of object manipulation. In the current research, we studied the end-state comfort effect, the tendency to ensure a comfortable position at the end rather than at the beginning of simple object manipulation tasks.

Influence of Viscous Loads on Motor Planning

Journal of Neurophysiology, 2007
Here we computationally investigate how encumbering the hand could alter predictions made by the minimum torque change (MTC) and minimum endpoint variance hypotheses (MEPV) of movement planning. After minutes of training, people have made arm trajectories in a robot-generated viscous force field that were similar to previous baseline trajectories ...

CONTINGENCY PLANNING FOR MOTOR CARRIERS

Energy, 1983
Abstract Trucks move three out of every four tons of urban intercity freight, while using only 7% of all oil consumed in transportation. Future energy contingency plans (which involves much more than proposing conservation measures) must take account of the economic importance of trucks, which the allocation rules and controls of the 1970s failed to ...

A neural framework for robot motor planning

Proceedings IROS '91:IEEE/RSJ International Workshop on Intelligent Robots and Systems '91, 2002
A computational model is proposed for trajectory planning of redundant robots starting from studies about synergy generation in human motor system. Based on the passive motion paradigm (PMP), i.e., on an analogic mechanism, the model shows a good representational power and is able to manage several robot motor planning problems.

Motor planning is impaired in Parkinson's disease

Brain Research, 1988
Reaction times (RTs) were assessed in parkinsonian and normal subjects under simple ballistic (bRT), simple tracking (tRT), and choice tracking (CRT) ankle plantarflexion RT paradigms. While RTs were prolonged in both groups for tracking versus bRT movements, between-group differences were not detectable for the simple RT (either ballistic or tracking)
