Atomic Layer Deposition Processes: Versatile Platforms for Engineering ZnO‐Chitosan Biointerfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Vapour phase metalation (VPM), multiplied pulsed vapour phase infiltration (MPI), and O2 plasma‑enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) tailor Zn–chitosan (Zn‑CS) films. PEALD improves wettability and biocompatibility. MPI enhances semiconductor behavior. Antiseptic selectivity: VPM → E. coli; MPI → H. pylori.

Collective self-caging of active filaments in virtual confinement

open access: yesNature Communications
Motility coupled to responsive behavior is essential for many microorganisms to seek and establish appropriate habitats. One of the simplest possible responses, reversing the direction of motion, is believed to enable filamentous cyanobacteria to form ...

Rapid Fabrication of Self‐Propelled and Steerable Magnetic Microcatheters for Precision Medicine

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A rapid Joule heating fabrication method for the production of self‐propelling, adaptive microcatheters, with tunable stiffness and integrated microfluidic channels is presented. Demonstrated through three microrobotic designs, including a steerable guiding catheter, an untethered wave‐crawling TubeBot, and a distal‐end propelled microcatheter, it was ...

Control of spontaneous charging of sliding water drops by plasma-surface treatment

open access: yesScientific Reports
Slide electrification is the spontaneous separation of electric charges at the rear of water drops sliding over solid surfaces. This study delves into how surfaces treated with a low-pressure plasma impact water slide electrification.

Who reads contemporary erotic novels and why?

open access: yesHumanities & Social Sciences Communications, 2021
In the wake of EL James’s series Fifty Shades of Grey, the book market has seen a veritable surge of bestselling erotic novels over the past decade. The online study reported here pursued two questions: (1) Who reads these erotic novels? (2) What are the

Energy Band Alignment and Electro‐Optical Behavior of Nearly Unstrained Monolayer MoS2 Heterostructures With GaN

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Large size (∼100 µm) monolayer MoS2 grown by LPI‐CVD on n‐GaN exhibit a high n‐type doping, very low strain, and a type‐I band alignment at MoS2/GaN interface. Photocurrent measurements under illumination with photon energies from ∼2 to ∼5 eV show superior electro‐optical performances of these MoS2/n‐GaN heterojunctions as compared to Ni/n‐GaN devices ...

Estimating sliding drop width via side-view features using recurrent neural networks

open access: yesScientific Reports
High speed side-view videos of sliding drops enable researchers to investigate drop dynamics and surface properties. However, understanding the physics of sliding requires knowledge of the drop width. A front-view perspective of the drop is necessary. In

Implementation of the parallel mean shift-based image segmentation algorithm on a GPU cluster

open access: yesInternational Journal of Digital Earth, 2019
The mean shift image segmentation algorithm is very computation-intensive. To address the need to deal with a large number of remote sensing (RS) image segmentations in real-world applications, this study has investigated the parallelization of the mean ...

Epigenetic inheritance of cell fates during embryonic development

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2014
During embryonic development a large number of widely differing and specialized cell types with identical genomes are generated from a single totipotent zygote.

Seasonal variation of tropospheric bromine monoxide over the Rann of Kutch salt marsh seen from space [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2016
The Rann of Kutch (India and Pakistan) is one of the largest salt deserts in the world. Being a so-called "seasonal salt marsh", it is regularly flooded during the Indian summer monsoon.
