Abstract Aerosols beneath a cloud base, a subcloud transition zone (SCTZ), are key to understand both the aerosol‐cloud interaction and aerosol‐radiation interactions. Lidars have been the primary means of observing aerosols in the SCTZ by virtue of enhanced light scattered by aerosol particles.
