Prosthetic leg powered by MR brake and SMA wires

SPIE Proceedings, 2014
Current knee designs for prosthetic legs rely on electric motors for both moving and stationary states. The electric motors draw an especially high level of current to sustain a fixed position. The advantage of using magnetorheological (MR) fluid is that it requires less current and can have a variable braking torque.

New approach to designing an MR brake using a small steel roller and MR fluid

Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology, 2009
A generated resistance force in the deformation process is considered to increase the resistance torque of a Magneto-Rheological (MR) brake when a variable stiffness material is rolled under the cylindrical form of a roller. This paper proposes a new approach to increase the resistance torque of an MR brake using a large-size magnetic particle which ...

MR Based Brake-by-Wire System with Self-Energizing Capability

Advanced Materials Research, 2014
Brake-by-wire system is a new concept of brake system using electromechanical actuators instead of conventional hydraulic actuators. It is more compact, more efficient and responses faster than traditional brake systems. Magneto-rheological (MR) fluid is widely used due to its outstanding properties. In this paper, an MR based Brake-by-wire system with

Analysis of a Novel MR Rotary Brake with Permanent Magnet

Transactions of the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers A, 2009
In this paper, a novel MR brake with permanent magnet is developed. This system consists of rotary disk, permanent magnet, spring and MR fluid. Permanent magnets are attached to the rotary disk and moves in the direction of radius. The magnets are linked to rotor axis by spring.

Spherical MR-Brake with Nintendo Wii Sensors for Haptics

2010
This research improves the position measurement system of a magnetorheological (MR) spherical brake we recently designed. The brake is a multi-DOF actuator. The initial design had a position measurement system with infrared (IR) sensors. Although the IR sensors gave good results, there were some performance degradations in the brake due to the noise in

Haptic Glove with MR Brakes for Distributed Finger Force Feedback

Presence: Teleoperators and Virtual Environments, 2009
Most existing haptic gloves are complicated user interfaces with remotely located actuators. More compact and simpler haptic gloves would greatly increase our ability to interact with virtual worlds in a more natural way. This research explored the design of a compact force feedback glove using a new finger mechanism and magnetorheological (MR) brakes

Compact MR-brake with serpentine flux path for haptics applications

World Haptics 2009 - Third Joint EuroHaptics conference and Symposium on Haptic Interfaces for Virtual Environment and Teleoperator Systems, 2009
This research explores a new approach to shape the magnetic flux path in a MR brake. Magnetically conductive and non-conductive elements were stacked to weave the magnetic flux through the rotor and the outer shell of the brake. This approach enabled design of a more compact and powerful MR brake.

Passive Haptic Interface with MR-Brakes for Dental Implant Surgery

Presence: Teleoperators and Virtual Environments, 2011
In this research a passive haptic interface is explored as a surgical aid for dental implant surgery. The placement of a dental implant is critical since positioning mistakes can lead to permanent damage in the nerves controlling the lips, long lasting numbness, and failure of the implant and the crown on it.
