(Abstracted from N Engl J Med 2019;380:1256–1266) Mucinous ovarian cancer is a rare form of epithelial ovarian cancer, accounting for approximately 3% of all cases. New understanding of the biological features of this unique disease requires an update to traditional diagnostic and therapeutic protocols that have been historically based on ...

Histopathology, 1990
Mucin production by prostatic carcinomas is not unusual and the identification of acidic mucin with an appropriate stain may be a useful adjunct in routine diagnostic surgical pathology. In our series of 53 cases of prostatic carcinoma, 20 (38%) showed significant acidic mucin production. This may allow differentiation from benign, hyperplastic tissues

Mucin Methods: Genes Encoding Mucins and Their Genetic Variation with a Focus on Gel-Forming Mucins
2011Mucin genes encode the polypeptide backbone of the mucin glycoproteins which are expressed on all epithelial surfaces and are major constituents of the mucus layer. Mucins are, thus, expressed at the interface between the external and the internal environment of the organism, and represent the first line of defence of our body.

Distinguishing Benign Dissecting Mucin (Stromal Mucin Pools) From Invasive Mucinous Carcinoma
Advances in Anatomic Pathology, 2008Mucin dissecting stroma suggests the presence of an invasive mucinous (colloid) carcinoma. However, in virtually every organ in which invasive mucinous carcinoma exists, there exist benign mimickers associated with dissecting mucin. This article reviews diagnostic criteria for the differential diagnosis of mucinous lesions of the breast, pancreas ...

Evaluation of mucinous metaplasia of the prostate gland by mucin histochemistry
British Journal of Urology, 1996Objective To evaluate the presence of mucinous metaplasia in normal and benign hyperplastic prostates, using stains for neutral and acidic mucins.Patients, materials and methods Normal prostate glands were removed during the post‐mortem examination of 11 consecutive subjects (median age 45 years, range 17–79) who had died accidentally.

Simultaneous Mucinous Cystadenoma of Ovary and Mucinous Cystadenocarcinoma of Pancreas
International Journal of Gastrointestinal Cancer, 2000Mucinous cystic tumors were discovered synchronously in the tail of the pancreas and in the right ovary of an adult female. Both tumors were amenable to surgical resection. The pancreatic tumor was a noninvasive mucinous cystadenocarcinoma and the ovarian tumor was a mucinous cystadenoma.

Heterogeneity in gastrointestinal mucins
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - General Subjects, 1983Pig digestive tract mucins have often been used as model mucins for studying mucin structure, function and metabolism. In the present study pig gastric mucin and pig colonic mucin in the subunit form have been characterised and compared. Following Sepharose 4B or 2B-CL gel chromatography, the mucin eluant fractions were assayed colorimetrically by both

Interaction of arabinogalactan with mucins
International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, 2014Arabinogalactan is a naturally-occurring, densely branched, polysaccharide mainly made-up of galactose and arabinose with variable amounts of uronic acids, which received attention for several industrial and biomedical applications. The ability of Western Larch arabinogalactan to interact with mucins was assessed by both classical gel filtration ...

Mucins of the human endocervix
Frontiers in Bioscience, 2001The physical character and amount of mucus secreted by the endocervix changes dramatically at midcycle to facilitate the reproductive process. Mucins expressed by the endocervical epithelium contribute to this all-important physiologic event. This review summarizes work from our laboratory demonstrating the mucin gene expression profile of cervical ...
