Mucolytics, Expectorants, and Mucokinetic Medications

Respiratory Care, 2007
In health, the airways are lined by a layer of protective mucus gel that sits atop a watery periciliary fluid. Mucus is an adhesive, viscoelastic gel, the biophysical properties of which are largely determined by entanglements of long polymeric gel-forming mucins, MUC5AC and MUC5B.

New scientific findings on the mucokinetic effect of ambroxol

Evidence for Self-Medication
The use of ambroxol is recommended by the German Society for Pneumology and Respiratory Medicine [1] to reduce symptom intensity and accelerate the recovery from acute and subacute cough. As mucoactive, it stands out by its mucokinetic effects, increasing cilia beating in the airways to remove the mucus.

Monodisperse labeled aerosol to visualize airflow redistribution in the lung after a mucokinetic drug.

The Journal of nuclear medicine and allied sciences, 1989
A technique based on inhalation of nebulized albumin minimicrospheres labeled with 99mTc (HAMM) was applied to visualize the redistribution of convective ventilation in the lung after a mucokinetic drug treatment. A randomized double-blind study comparing the effect of 7 days treatment with 800 mg daily oral sobrerol versus placebo in two groups of 10 ...
