The Changing Epidemiology of Breakthrough Invasive Fungal Disease in Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Recipients in the Era of Modified‐Release Posaconazole Prophylaxis

open access: yesTransplant Infectious Disease, Volume 27, Issue 6, November/December 2025.
This single‐center retrospective cohort study on 300 allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients from January 2017 to May 2020, in which posaconazole modified release was the most common primary antifungal prophylaxis, demonstrated a breakthrough invasive fungal disease (bIFD) rate of 9%, with associated significant all‐cause mortality at ...

Isolated Renal Zygomycosis, A Rare and Lethal Cause of Massive Renal Infarction-Report of Two Cases [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research, 2019
Zygomycosis (Mucormycosis) is an infection caused by a class Zygomycetes fungi. The fungal organisms classified as Mucorales order cause a spectrum of predominantly angio-invasive disease in immunosuppressed patients.

A Phylum-Level Phylogenetic Classification of Zygomycete Fungi Based on Genome-Scale Data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Zygomycete fungi were classified as a single phylum, Zygomycota, based on sexual reproduction by zygospores, frequent asexual reproduction by sporangia, absence of multicellular sporocarps, and production of coenocytic hyphae, all with some exceptions ...

Repositioning Antimicrobial Peptides Against WHO‐Priority Fungi

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 37, October 6, 2025.
The growing burden of drug‐resistant fungal infections, driven by pathogens such as Candida auris, Cryptococcus neoformans, and Aspergillus fumigatus, underscores the urgent need for novel antifungal therapies. This review explores antimicrobial peptides as promising agents with membrane‐disruptive activity, immunomodulatory properties, and delivery ...

Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of Novel 2‐(Piperidin‐4‐yl)‐1,2,3,4‐tetrahydroisoquinoline and 2‐(Piperidin‐4‐yl)decahydroisoquinoline Antimycotics

open access: yesArchiv der Pharmazie, Volume 358, Issue 10, October 2025.
A series of 13 hybrid molecules of both lead structures were prepared using reductive amination as key reaction step. The antimycotic potency of the resulting compounds was evaluated against yeast and mold species. Two compounds showed remarkable potency against several yeasts, and even against Candida krusei.

Host Immune Defense upon Fungal Infections with Mucorales: Pathogen-Immune Cell Interactions as Drivers of Inflammatory Responses

open access: yesJournal of Fungi, 2020
During the last few decades, mucormycosis has emerged as one of the most common fungal infections, following candidiasis and aspergillosis. The fungal order responsible for causing mucormycosis is the Mucorales.
