DOPA synthesis in non-producer cultures of Mucuna deeringiana

Phytochemistry, 1980
Abstract Cell cultures of Mucuna deeringiana on various media fail to accumulate DOPA or stizolobic acid. Radiotracer studies prove that both compounds are being synthesized in the cells; however, the apparent lack of production is due to metabolic emphasis on catabolism instead of storage.

Tolerance to acid soil conditions of the velvet beans Mucuna pruriens var. utilis and M. deeringiana

Plant and Soil, 1991
Velvet beans, fast growing leguminous cover crops used in the humid tropics, are shallow rooted on acid soils. This might be due to an inherent branching pattern, to an intrinsic toxicity of the acid subsoil or to a relative preference for root development in the topsoil.

Dopa ring-cleavage in the biogenesis of stizolobic acid in Mucuna deeringiana

Phytochemistry, 1976
Abstract Tyrosine and DOPA are specifically incorporated into stizolobic acid in young leaves of M. deeringiana . The biosynthesis of this heterocyclic amino acid must, therefore, involve 4,5-extra-diol ring-cleavage of the aromatic ring of DOPA and subsequent cyclization.
