Seabed classification using multibeam echosounder

2008 1st International Conference on Information Technology, 2008
The method of seabed identification and classification from multibeam sonar echoes is presented. The proposed approach is based on calculation of a set of parameters of an echo envelope, similarly as in seafloor classification using single beam echosounder.

High-resolution interferometry for multibeam echosounders

Europe Oceans 2005, 2005
Two main approaches are met today in swath bathymetry sonar systems. Interferometric sidescan sonars use the phase difference between two (or more) close receivers to estimate the arrival angle of instant signal. Multibeam echosounders (MBES) use beamforming methods (prior to amplitude or phase detection) in order to obtain an intrinsic spatial ...

Evolution and Future of Multibeam Echosounder Technology

2007 Symposium on Underwater Technology and Workshop on Scientific Use of Submarine Cables and Related Technologies, 2007
The MultiBeam Echo Sounder (MBES) has become an important tool in oceanic applications such as seafloor mapping, sediment evaluation, sub-bottom profiling, surveys, fisheries research, mine countermeasures, and underwater inspections. Intense interest has been directed toward improvements in performance, and new concepts are being introduced at a rapid

Roughness parameters imaging with a multibeam echosounder

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2017
The aim of the study is to perform quantitative imaging of the seafloor random parameters using a multibeam echosounder. More specifically we present in this communication a focus on the interface roughnesses with controlled parameters using a 3D modeling of a layered media with rough interfaces.

Delaunay Triangulation Algorithms Useful for Multibeam Echosounding

Journal of Surveying Engineering, 2003
The Delaunay triangulation is a widely appreciated and investigated mathematical model for topographic surface represen- tation. After a brief theoretical description, six possible basic algorithms to construct a Delaunay triangulation are analyzed and properties that can be exploited for multibeam echosounder data processing are investigated.

Multibeam echosounder calibration with split-aperture transmission

2014 Oceans - St. John's, 2014
Results are described for a multibeam echosounder calibration experiment in which the elevation angle of a standard spherical target was estimated using a split aperture geometry on the transmit array. This is an extension of the two transmitters — one receiver concept described by Messer et al. (IEEE TAES 32–3, 1158–1164, 1996).

Statistical characterization of multibeam echosounder data

IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society. OCEANS'98. Conference Proceedings (Cat. No.98CH36259), 2002
The statistical studies of high resolution sonar images recorded by a 95 kHz multibeam echosounder prove that the Rayleigh law is no more adapted to the description of the textured sonar images. Seafloor reverberation statistical models have been put forward to interpret those high resolution particularities and to propose the correlated K-law ...

Methods of Multibeam Echosounders Resolution Increasing

2006
The methods of resolution increasing were considered in this work. These methods are applied to the samples of experimental data as well as model data. The results obtained can be compared with ones are found by the standard DFT processing.

Robust Subsea Pipeline Tracking with Noisy Multibeam Echosounder

2018 IEEE/OES Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Workshop (AUV), 2018
Subsea pipelines are crucial offshore assets aiding transportation of oil and gas. Regular inspections are required for assessing their integrity to ensure continual use and avoid possible marine ecosystem damage. This paper proposes a novel real-time algorithm for pipeline detection and tracking at close proximity using only a multibeam echosounder ...
