Depth‐to‐Areal Staging Heterogeneity Preceding Lithium Plating in Graphite Anodes Revealed by Operando Imaging

Fast charging drives graphite anodes far from equilibrium, yet where lithium plating begins has remained hidden. Operando optical microscopy here reveals that neighboring regions advance through the staging sequence asynchronously, and that domains reaching advanced lithiation earliest become the preferential sites where plating initiates.
