Fine-Grained Structure Formation in 7475 Al Alloy during Hot Multidirectional Forging
Materials Science Forum, 2006Effect of strain rate on grain refinement was studied in multidirectional forging (MDF) of a coarse-grained 7475 Al alloy at 490oC under strain rates of 3 × 10-4 s-1 and 3 × 10-2 s-1. At a strain rate of 3 × 10-4 s-1, the stress – strain ( σ - ε) behavior shows significant work softening just after yielding and a steady-state flow at higher strains ...

Abstract A particulate reinforced magnesium matrix composite fabricated by stir casting was subjected to multidirectional forging (MDF) at a temperature of 420 °C. The results showed that grains of matrix in the composite were significantly refined after 1 MDF pass, and gradually refined till 3 MDF passes.

Grain refinement in a magnesium alloy AZ31 was studied in multi-directional forging (MDF) at a strain rate of 3×10-3s-1 with decreasing temperature from 623K to 423K. The MDF was carried out up to large cumulative strains with changing the loading direction during decreasing temperature from pass to pass.

Ultrafine grain of metals can be obtained through severe plastic deformation techniques. One of the severe plastic deformation techniques is multidirectional forging, in which multiple forging is applied on a workpiece in three orthogonal directions. In this study, the multidirectional forging, with varying die dimensions, each with a single press on ...

Controlling the microstructure and strength of copper submitted to multidirectional forging
Materials Science and TechnologySevere plastic deformation (SPD) techniques have been widely used to enhance strength and promote grain refinement in metals. Multi-Directional Forging (MDF), based on successive compressions with strain path changes, enables tailoring of microstructure and mechanical properties by controlling strain amplitude (Δ ɛ )

Abstract The as-cast Mg-4Zn-2Gd-0.5Ca alloy mainly contained I phase and W phase, while the I phase dissolved into Mg substrate after homogenization treatment which improved the alloy’s corrosion resistance. After the application of multidirectional forging (MDF), the grains were refined obviously accompanied with the precipitation of I phase.

Abstract A particulate reinforced magnesium matrix nanocomposite was subjected to multidirectional forging (MDF). The results showed that the microstructure of the nanocomposite mainly consisted of some large initial grains and fine recrystallized grains along initial grain boundaries after 1 MDF pass.
