Multiphase Electric Machines for Variable-Speed Applications
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, 2008Although the concept of variable-speed drives, based on utilization of multiphase machines, dates back to the late 1960s, it was not until the mid- to late 1990s that multiphase drives became serious contenders for various applications. These include electric ship propulsion, locomotive traction, electric and hybrid electric vehicles, ldquomore ...

In this chapter, the benchmark SG presented in Chap. 4 will be used to develop HG designs suitable for the wind generation scheme discussed in Chap. 3. The HG designs are evolved from benchmark machine design maintaining magnetic and electric loading equivalence so as to realize designs that have some practical validation.

Multiphase machines with individual slot activation
Electrical Engineering, 2018Under the aspect of decreasing costs for power electronic elements due to mass production, machines with feeding from multiphase inverters can be considered where each slot is activated as a separate phase. The number of IGBT switches is increased, but the current rating of the IGBTs becomes very small, thus reaching the region of cheap mass production

Multiphase machines for electric vehicle traction
2014 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC), 2014To have greater impact on application it is desirable to integrate machines and their associated power electronic converters into complicated systems that share component count to minimise cost. However, while compactness of systems is achieved, reliability of the power conversion components can be compromised by the arduous nature of system operating ...

Refurbishing three-phase synchronous reluctance machines to multiphase machines
Electrical Engineering, 2020Refurbishing electrical machines to have a higher performance and/or reliability is a clear trend in the circular economy. This paper investigates the gain in efficiency, torque density and reliability with replacing the windings and the iron of the stator of existing three-phase synchronous reluctance machines (SynRMs), resulting in a multiphase ...

Axially Stacked Multiphase Flux Reversal Machine
IECON 2019 - 45th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, 2019This paper introduces a novel three-phase flux reversal machine. Unlike conventional machines, the proposed machine is based on a multi-layered design with three magnetically independent rotors and stators on the same shaft. Each layer represents a single-phase flux reversal machine (FRM), which is mechanically shifted against each other.

Variable-speed AC drives are nowadays based on three-phase electrical machines fed by power electronic converters acting as power interface between the electrical machine and AC or DC power sources. Nevertheless, in the last two decades the multiphase electrical drives have become an interesting alternative for particular applications.

On performance figures of multiphase machines
2008 18th International Conference on Electrical Machines, 2008Various performance aspects of multi-phase machines are investigated with the main focus on 6-phase (dual stator) synchronous machines. It is shown that 6-phase machines have benefits over their 3-phase counterparts regardless of machine topology i.e., PM, induction or synchronous. Differences between 6-phase and 3-phase machines are emphasized through
