Hyperferritinemic sepsis, macrophage activation syndrome, and mortality in a pediatric research network: a causal inference analysis

open access: yesCritical Care, 2023
Background One of five global deaths are attributable to sepsis. Hyperferritinemic sepsis (> 500 ng/mL) is associated with increased mortality in single-center studies. Our pediatric research network’s objective was to obtain rationale for designing anti-

LINC01116, a hypoxia‐lncRNA marker of pathological lymphangiogenesis and poor prognosis in lung adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The LINC01116 long noncoding RNA is induced by hypoxia and associated with poor prognosis and high recurrence rates in two cohorts of lung adenocarcinoma patients. Here, we demonstrate that besides its expression in cancer cells, LINC01116 is markedly expressed in lymphatic endothelial cells of the tumor stroma in which it participates in hypoxia ...

Death due to COVID‐19 in a patient with diabetes, epilepsy, and gout comorbidities

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, 2021
There is evidence of increased incidence, rapid progression, and poor prognosis of COVID‐19 in patients with underlying comorbidities such as diabetes and epilepsy. Developing effective treatment regimens for COVID‐19 patients with multiple comorbidities

PARP inhibition and pharmacological ascorbate demonstrate synergy in castration‐resistant prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pharmacologic ascorbate (vitamin C) increases ROS, disrupts cellular metabolism, and induces DNA damage in CRPC cells. These effects sensitize tumors to PARP inhibition, producing synergistic growth suppression with olaparib in vitro and significantly delayed tumor progression in vivo. Pyruvate rescue confirms ROS‐dependent activity.

Dealing with multiple organ failure

open access: yesRevista Cubana de Cardiología y Cirugía Cardiovascular, 2014
One of the greatest challenges faced by physicians in an ICU is multiple organ failure, syndrome that shows unclear multifactor etiopathogenesis, varied clinical picture, few early diagnosis devices, high mortality rate and non-specific treatment so far.

Polytrauma patients with infections associated with health care admitted to an intensive care unit

open access: yesRevista Electrónica Dr. Zoilo E. Marinello Vidaurreta, 2021
Background: in the treatment of traumatized patients, sepsis with subsequent multiple organ failure is the main non-neurological cause of death in those who survive the first 48 hours after trauma. Objective: to characterize polytrauma patients with ...

The therapeutic efficacy of adjunct therapeutic plasma exchange for septic shock with multiple organ failure: a single-center experience

open access: yesCritical Care, 2020
Background Sepsis remains a common condition with high mortality when multiple organ failure develops. The evidence for therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) in this setting is promising but inconclusive.

LDAcoop: Integrating non‐linear population dynamics into the analysis of clonogenic growth in vitro

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Limiting dilution assays (LDAs) quantify clonogenic growth by seeding serial dilutions of cells and scoring wells for colony formation. The fraction of negative wells is plotted against cells seeded and analyzed using the non‐linear modeling of LDAcoop.
