Luminal Phospholipase D Attacks Bacterial Membranes in Dictyostelium discoideum Phagosomes

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
This study shows that PldX, a luminal Phospholipase D, is necessary for the efficient destruction of ingested Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria in Dictyostelium discoideum phagosomes. PldX and the AlyL lysozyme together attack the bacterial membrane and permeabilize it. To date, the molecular substrate of PldX remains to be determined. ABSTRACT Phagocytic

ModE Regulates Alternative Nitrogenase Expression in the Methanogen Methanosarcina acetivorans

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
During nitrogen fixation, the methanogen Methanosarcina acetivorans produces the alternative vanadium‐nitrogenase and iron‐nitrogenase only when molybdenum is unavailable to support the activity of molybdenum‐nitrogenase. Our work demonstrates that the expression of the alternative nitrogenases in M.

The Flagellin‐Specific Chaperone FliS of Borrelia burgdorferi Controls the Cytoplasmic Pool of Flagellins at the Level of Translation Initiation, Secretion, and Proteolysis

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
FliS, a flagellin protein chaperon of the Lyme disease pathogen Borrelia burgdorferi, controls the cytoplasmic pool of flagellins (FlaB) at the level of translation initiation, secretion, and proteolysis. Deletion of fliS blocks FlaB secretion and translation initiation through a pattern‐switching mechanism of FliS‐FlaB‐FliW/CsrA. Therefore, the mutant

Staphylococcus aureus COL: An Atypical Model Strain of MRSA That Exhibits Slow Growth and Antibiotic Tolerance due to a Mutation in PRPP Synthetase

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
COL is an unusual “model” strain of Staphylococcus aureus that exhibits slow growth and multidrug antibiotic tolerance. This phenotype is primarily due to a mutation in Prs, which synthesizes the core metabolite phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate (PRPP). Introduction of the COL Prs allele into the antibiotic‐susceptible strain Newman confers tolerance, while

Effect of adiposity status on salivary Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus

open access: yesOral Diseases, EarlyView.
Abstract Objectives To investigate the effect of adiposity status, salivary physicochemical parameters, and inflammatory biomarkers on the salivary abundance of the two main cariogenic bacteria Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus among Hong Kong adolescents. Subjects and Methods This study included 180 adolescents aged 12–15 years from Hong
