Banana crops (Musa spp.) contribute significantly to the economy and food security of Asian, African, and South and Central American nations (Banana Link 2023; FAO 2023). Their production is constrained by multiple abiotic and biotic factors (e.g. drought, nutrient limitation and diseases) some of which lack effective solutions.

Pestalotia leprogena on leaves of Musa spp. in Jamaica

In Jamaica, large fawn-coloured lesions are common on leaves of Musa balbisiana and ‘Bluggoe’ plantain, but rare on the Lacatan, Robusta and Gros Michel banana varieties. Pestalotia leprogena is consistently associated with the disease and readily isolated from young lesions.
