Trends in tricyclic antidepressant prescribing and poisoning in England and Wales 2016–2020

open access: yesBritish Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, Volume 91, Issue 6, Page 1727-1738, June 2025.
Abstract Aims Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) are commonly prescribed despite no longer being a NICE‐recommended first‐line treatment for depression and their recognized toxicity in overdose. The Potential Ability of Betulinic Acid to Prevent Experimentally Induced Acute Pancreatitis in Rats

open access: yesBasic &Clinical Pharmacology &Toxicology, Volume 136, Issue 6, June 2025.
ABSTRACT Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a serious pancreatic inflammatory disease that results in pancreatic enzyme activation and autodegradation. Betulinic acid (BA), a pentacyclic triterpene of natural origin that was isolated from several plants, has anti‐inflammatory, immunomodulatory and antioxidant effects that can help with AP.

Oral hyoscine butylbromide exerts spasmolytic effects in both gastrointestinal and urogenital tissues in rats

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, Volume 182, Issue 11, Page 2487-2502, June 2025.
Background and Purpose Hyoscine butylbromide (HBB) has a low oral (PO) bioavailability. Further, limited data on its activity on non‐gastrointestinal (GI) smooth muscle spasms after oral dosing are available, causing its effects beyond the GI tract to be questioned.

Growth Differentiation Factor 15 Induces Gastric Fundus Contraction Involving Cholinergic Excitation: Morphofunctional Evidence in Rodent Models

open access: yesJournal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Volume 29, Issue 11, June 2025.
ABSTRACT Growth Differentiation Factor 15 (GDF15) is a peptide from the transforming growth factor (TGF)‐β superfamily, typically found at low levels in mammalian tissues, but significantly upregulated during cellular stress or injury. Initially recognised for its role in inducing anorexia and vomiting, GDF15 is now seen as a broader regulator of ...

Rethinking Sensory Information Processing: The Essential Role of Astrocytes

open access: yesJournal of Neurochemistry, Volume 169, Issue 6, June 2025.
In this review, we discuss recent advances highlighting the emerging roles of astrocytes in sensory information processing. We review how astrocytes are anatomically integrated within distinct sensory systems, how they are activated by specific external stimuli, and how their modulation influences the output of sensory neurons to shape behavioral ...
