Respiratory Muscle Fatigue

1995
Ventilatory failure may accompany a variety of pulmonary and neuromuscular diseases. There has been much controversy about whether this failure is due to respiratory muscle fatigue at peripheral sites or a failure of drive at sites within the central nervous system. The chapter reviews this topic.

Muscle Fatigue and Pain

Acta Medica Scandinavica, 1986
ABSTRACT. Muscle fatigue and pain are together common symptoms which can be analysed physiologically. For many patients attending a medical clinic the problem for the doctor is to decide whether the problem is “in the mind” or “in the muscle”. A history of the symptoms occurring at rest without any exercise is a hint of psychological origin.

Development of Mobile Muscle Fatigue Display Based on Muscle Fatigue Scale

2020 IEEE International Conference on Consumer Electronics (ICCE), 2020
This paper describes our developed biofeedback device based on muscle fatigue scale (MFS). At present, Japan faces the issues of population decrease and a super-aging society. Extension of healthy life expectancy and reduction of health disparities are especially the ultimate objectives that should be realized in Japan through the improvement of ...

Respiratory muscle fatigue

Intensive Care Medicine, 1989
When respiratory muscle demands for energy exceed supplies, the energy stored within the muscles is depleted and the force of contraction diminishes. This state is called inspiratory muscle fatigue. When it occurs alveolar ventilation decreases, arterial carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2) increases and hypercapnic respiratory failure ensues.

Respiratory Muscle Fatigue Alters Cycling Performance and Locomotor Muscle Fatigue

Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 2020
ABSTRACT Purpose This study aimed to determine if preexisting respiratory muscle fatigue (RMF) alters motoneuronal output, locomotor muscle fatigue, and cycling performance. Methods Eight trained male cyclists performed 5-km cycling time trials after a resistive breathing ...

Respiratory muscle fatigue

Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice, 2002
The contribution of respiratory muscle fatigue to the development of ventilatory failure has been the subject of considerable interest and has stimulated much research. Experimental studies in dogs have shown respiratory muscle fatigue to be a cause of ventilatory failure in both cardiogenic and septic shock models.

A Comparison of Assessment Methods for Muscle Fatigue in Muscle Fatigue Contraction

2016
Muscle fatigue often occurs in daily life and work. The assessment method of muscle fatigue based on the surface electromyography (sEMG) has been well reported in some comprehensive reviews. Recently, the time domain parameters, frequency domain parameters, discrete wavelet transform and non-linear methods have been widely used for the evaluation of ...

No Muscle Is an Island

Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 2016
Muscle fatigue has been studied with a variety approaches, tools and technologies. The foci of these studies have ranged tremendously, from molecules to the entire organism. Single cell and animal models have been used to gain mechanistic insight into the fatigue process.

Function and Fatigue of Respiratory Muscles

Chest, 1985
The functional anatomy of the respiratory muscles and their actions and interactions are presented, particularly of the diaphragm. The large amount of blood flow to respiratory muscles and the determination of blood flow are reviewed, while the role these muscles play in the overall economy of the body in health and disease are discussed.

Fatigue Effects on Muscle Excitability

International Journal of Sports Medicine, 1996
Repeated isometric or shortening contractions of skeletal muscle cause muscle fatigue but several prior studies have reported an apparent absence of muscle fatigue when humans performed up to 70 lengthening contractions. We pursued the hypothesis that perhaps muscle excitability is a factor that aids force preservation with repeated eccentric actions ...
