Branched fibers from old fast-twitch dystrophic muscles are the sites of terminal damage in muscular dystrophy [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Physiology-Cell Physiology, 2018
A striking pathological feature of dystrophinopathies is the presence of morphologically abnormal branched skeletal muscle fibers. The deterioration of muscle contractile function in Duchenne muscular dystrophy is accompanied by both an increase in number and complexity of these branched fibers.

Fhod3 in zebrafish supports myofibril stability during growth of embryonic skeletal muscle

open access: yesDevelopmental Dynamics, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Actin filament organization in cardiomyocytes critically depends on the formin Fhod3, but a role for Fhod3 in skeletal muscle development has not yet been described. Results We demonstrate here that in zebrafish mutated for one of two fhod3 paralog genes, fhod3a, skeletal muscle of the trunk appears normal through 2 days post ...

Elementary Steps of the Cross-Bridge Cycle in Fast-Twitch Fiber Types from Rabbit Skeletal Muscles [PDF]

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 2005
To understand the molecular mechanism underlying the diversity of mammalian skeletal muscle fibers, the elementary steps of the cross-bridge cycle were investigated in three fast-twitch fiber types from rabbit limb muscles. Skinned fibers were maximally Ca(2+)-activated at 20 degrees C and the effects of MgATP, phosphate (P, P(i)), and MgADP were ...

Absence seizures: Update on signaling mechanisms and networks

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, EarlyView.
Abstract Absence seizures (AS) are a hallmark of genetic generalized epilepsies (GGE), characterized by brief episodes of impaired consciousness accompanied by electroencephalographic spike‐and‐wave discharges (SWDs). Traditionally attributed to cortico‐thalamo‐cortical (CTC) dysrhythmia, emerging evidence suggests a more intricate pathophysiological ...

Neuromuscular junction pathology is correlated with differential motor unit vulnerability in spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy

open access: yesActa Neuropathologica Communications, 2022
Spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) is an X-linked, neuromuscular neurodegenerative disease for which there is no cure. The disease is characterized by a selective decrease in fast-muscle power (e.g., tongue pressure, grip strength) accompanied by ...

From regulatory mechanisms to cutting‐edge applications: Research progress of ultrasound, electrical, magnetic, and optical stimulation in neural modulation

open access: yesJournal of Intelligent Medicine, EarlyView.
Abstract In recent years, the clinical treatment and symptom management of neurological disorders have faced significant challenges due to the high complexity of the nervous system's structure and function. Against this backdrop, physical stimulation techniques have emerged as a vital complementary approach to traditional pharmacological treatments and

The Musculoskeletal Consequences of Mouth Breathing in Adults: A Systematic Review

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
Chronic mouth breathing can have a negative impact on posture, cause temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD), reduced masticatory muscle activity and efficiency, and suprahyoid muscle overuse. Postural changes include a head forward posture and increased lumbar lordosis.

Dietary oleic acid intake increases the proportion of type 1 and 2X muscle fibers in mice

open access: yesScientific Reports
Skeletal muscle is one of the largest metabolic tissues in mammals and is composed of four different types of muscle fibers (types 1, 2A, 2X, and 2B); however, type 2B is absent in humans.

Key Interventions in Friedreich's Ataxia and Their Impact on Patient Outcomes: A Systematic Review

open access: yesMovement Disorders, EarlyView.
Abstract Friedreich's ataxia (FA) is a rare neurodegenerative disease with multisystemic symptoms that requires multidisciplinary care. This systematic review summarizes available pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions, their outcomes, and alignment with patient‐centered care domains, as well as their impact on these domains.

Quantitative Spatiotemporal Analysis of Ultrasound Images of Fasciculations in ALS

open access: yesMuscle &Nerve, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction/Aims Fasciculations are a hallmark of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), yet quantitative description of individual events on muscle ultrasound (MUS) is limited. We characterized the spatiotemporal kinematics of individual fasciculations to determine whether they differ between ALS and other neurogenic conditions.
