Advances in research on the prenatal development of skeletal muscle in animals in relation to the quality of muscle-based food. II -Genetic factors related to animal performance and advances in methodology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Selective breeding is an effective tool to improve livestock. Several selection experiments have been conducted to study direct selection responses as well as correlated responses in traits of skeletal muscle growth and function. Moreover, comparisons of

Hydrogel‐Based Method for High‐Resolution Measurements of Contact Mechanics in Rapid Biological Adhesives: A Case Study in Cuttlefish Tentacle Strikes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Cuttlefish and squid can catch their prey within milliseconds using specialized tentacles and suckers. The physics of how the suckers can attach so quickly has remained a mystery given the technical challenges of studying them in vivo. In this publication, we develop a hydrogel that retains imprints of the suckers in order to estimate the forces they ...

Imaging displacement and strain in the medial gastrocnemius muscle during ankle-joint motion using 2D-ciné DENSE MRI [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Skeletal muscle structure has been defined on both macro and microscopic levels by gross dissection, light- and electron-microscopy. The basic physiological building blocks involve the electromechanical coupling between interlinking actin and myosin ...

Structural diversity in muscle fibres of chicken breast

open access: yes, 1988
hicken breast muscle is usually considered to be a relatively homogeneous white muscle and has therefore been widely used for studies of muscle proteins.

Architected Bio‐Based Iontronic Skin With Dual‐Mode Pressure and Strain Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐based acrylates in combination with an ionic liquid create 3D‐printed ionogels with compositionally tuneable mechanics and ionic conductivity. Gyroid architectures amplify low‐pressure sensitivity while preserving robust strain sensing, enabling dual‐mode detection of pressure and deformation.

Notch signalling is required for the formation of structurally stable muscle fibres in zebrafish.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
BackgroundAccurate regulation of Notch signalling is central for developmental processes in a variety of tissues, but its function in pectoral fin development in zebrafish is still unknown.Methodology/principal findingsHere we show that core elements ...

Advancing Human Skin Equivalents: The Crucial Role of Neurovascular Integration

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This review discusses the importance of integrating vascular and peripheral nerve systems into human skin equivalents (HSEs) to better recapitulate native skin physiology. Recent advances in vascularized, innervated, and neurovascularized HSEs are highlighted, together with emerging bioengineering strategies, current challenges, and future ...
