Polypharmacy and Symptoms of Pain in Women with Fibromyalgia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Fibromyalgia (FMS), a syndrome characterized by chronic widespread pain (CWP), has no known etiology, and coincides with other life-altering symptoms including fatigue, mood disturbances and non-restorative sleep.

Volume of the effect compartment in simulations of neuromuscular block [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
BACKGROUND: The study examines the role of the volume of the effect compartment in simulations of neuromuscular block (NMB) produced by nondepolarizing muscle relaxants.

Well-Established and Traditional Use of Vegetal Extracts as an Approach to the “Deep Roots” of Cough

open access: yesChildren
Cough is a common presenting symptom for patients in a primary care setting and significantly impacts a patient’s quality of life. Cough involves a complex reflex arc beginning with the stimulation of sensory nerves that function as cough receptors that ...

Effects of central muscle relaxants on the morphine-induced Straub tail reaction.

open access: yesChemical and Pharmaceutical Bulletin, 1977
An investigation of the pharmacological mechanism of the Straub tail reaction (STR) was made of the intracerebral (i.c.) injection of morphine. In addition, the effects of central muscle relaxants on the STR were examined. The STR was elicited by i.c. injection of morphine.

Designing the Next Generation of Biomaterials through Nanoengineering

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Nanoengineering enables precise control over biomaterial interactions with living systems by tuning surface energy, defects, porosity, and crystallinity. This review highlights how these nanoscale design parameters drive advances in regenerative medicine, drug delivery, bioprinting, biosensing, and bioimaging, while outlining key translational ...

Effects of stress and relaxation on central pain modulation in chronic whiplash and fibromyalgia patients compared to healthy controls [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Background: Compelling evidence has demonstrated that impaired central pain modulation contributes to persistent pain in patients with chronic whiplash associated disorders (WAD) and fibromyalgia (FM).

Metabolism of afloqualone, a new centrally acting muscle relaxant, in monkeys and dogs.

open access: yesJournal of Pharmacobio-Dynamics, 1983
The disposition and metabolism of afloqualone [6-amino-2-fluoromethyl-3-(o-tolyl)-4(3H)-quinazolinone, AFQ] were studied in monkeys and dogs after oral administration of 14C-AFQ. In both species the blood radioactivity reached a maximum 1 to 2 h after the administration, and decreased with apparent half-lives of 3.2 h in the monkey and 7.2 h in the dog.

A Photonastic Prototissue Capable of Photo‐Mechano‐Chemical Transduction

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Mimicking energy transduction in prototissue assemblies remains a challenge of bottom‐up synthetic biology. In this work, prototissues integrating protocells with photothermal gold nanoparticle proto‐organelles and a thermoresponsive polymeric proto‐cortex are developed.

Production of Designer Mabe Pearls in the Black-lipped Pearl Oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, and the Winged Pearl Oyster, Pteria penguin, from Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The black-lipped pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, is sporadically distributed in the Indo-Pacific region, where they have been traditionally used for food, ornaments, jewelry, tools, and more recently for the production of black pearls (Lane et
