From lactation to malignancy: A comparison between healthy and cancerous breast gland at single‐cell resolution reveals new issues for tumorigenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Single‐cell RNA sequencing reveals an opposite role of SLPI in basal tumors based on metastatic spread, along with shared activation of specific regulons in cancer cells and mature luminal lactocytes, as well as downregulation of MALAT1 and NEAT1 in the latter.

Acute effects of short and long duration dynamic stretching protocols on muscle strength

open access: yesFisioterapia em Movimento
Objective Compare the acute effects of dynamic stretching protocols on the isokinetic performance of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles at two velocities in adult males.Methodology Included the participation of 14 males (21 ± 2.6 years; 178 ± 0.4 cm ...

High risk of malnutrition is associated with low muscle mass in older hospitalized patients - a prospective cohort study

open access: yesBMC Geriatrics, 2017
Background Malnutrition, low muscle strength and muscle mass are highly prevalent in older hospitalized patients and associated with adverse outcomes. Malnutrition may be a risk factor for developing low muscle mass.

A bioinformatics screen identifies TCF19 as an aggressiveness‐sustaining gene in prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Gene expression meta‐analysis in multiple prostate cancer patient cohorts identifies Transcription factor 19 (TCF19) as an aggressiveness‐sustaining gene with prognostic potential. TCF19 is a gene repressed by androgen signaling that sustains core cancer‐related processes such as vascular permeability or tumor growth and metastasis.

Factors, mechanisms and improvement methods of muscle strength loss

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology
Muscle strength is a crucial aspect of muscle function, essential for maintaining normal physical activity and quality of life. The global aging population coupled with the increasing prevalence of muscle disorders and strength loss, poses a remarkable ...

Relationships between muscle strength and multi-channel surface EMG parameters in eighty-eight elderly

open access: yesEuropean Review of Aging and Physical Activity, 2018
Background Since age-related muscle strength loss cannot be explained solely by muscle atrophy, other determinants would also contribute to muscle strength in elderly. The present study aimed to clarify contribution of neuromuscular activation pattern to

Systemic inflammation, body composition, and physical performance in old community-dwellers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Background Chronic inflammation, changes in body composition, and declining physical function are hallmarks of the ageing process. The aim of the present study was to provide a preliminary characterisation of the relationship among these age-related ...

Transcriptional regulation of neuropeptide receptors underlies context‐dependent adaptation in Drosophila melanogaster

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Under environmental changes, the expression level of neuropeptide (NP) and neuropeptide receptor (NPR) genes changes to confer context‐dependent adaptation to the model organism Drosophila melanogaster. Through finding more regulatory elements in the NPR genes in comparison with their ligands (NPs), we found that NPR‐biased transcriptional regulation ...

Muscle Strength and Electromyography.

open access: yesJournal of exercise physiology, 1992

A unified model for Duchenne muscular dystrophy gene involvement in cancer: context‐dependent tumour suppression and oncogenicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We propose a context‐dependent model where the Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) gene acts as a tumour suppressor in aggressive tumours and as an oncogene in less aggressive ones. We propose this model as a unified framework to explain the opposing survival associations with DMD expression and to guide experimental exploration of the dual role of DMD ...
