Muscle weakness in osteoarthritis
Current Opinion in Rheumatology, 1997Muscle has an integral role in the structure and function of joints. Evidence for muscle weakness in osteoarthritis of the knee exists and is not fully explained by the effects of aging. Weakness is associated with pain and disability. The temporal relationship requires further study, but preliminary evidence for a causative role is emerging.

Even if the muscle impairment secondary to hypovitaminosis D has been known since the seventeenth century in children affected by rickets, we had to wait for the discovery of the presence of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) in the human skeletal muscle cells to witness a remarkable growth of knowledge concerning the action of vitamin D on muscle.
