Mycobacterium avium Complex Disease
ABSTRACT Despite the ubiqitous nature of Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) organisms in the environment, relatively few of those who are infected develop disease. Thus, some degree of susceptibility due to either underlying lung disease or immunosuppression is required.

An 81‐year‐old man presented with multiple bilateral pulmonary nodules and detection of Mycobacterium intracellulare, initially suggesting nontuberculous mycobacterial lung disease. However, heterogeneous radiological changes and progressive enlargement of selected nodules led to surgical lung biopsy, which revealed diffuse large B‐cell lymphoma with ...

Cutaneous non‐tuberculous mycobacterial infections: A retrospective study of 94 cases from Germany
Summary Background Cutaneous non‐tuberculous mycobacterial infections (NTM) remain a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. The aim of this study was to characterize cutaneous NTM infections in Germany over a 24‐year‐period. Patients and Methods 73 patients with cutaneous NTM infections diagnosed at 17 different German University Hospitals from 2000 ...

Mycobacterium avium complex, an emerging pathogen in Massachusetts [PDF]
We report a study of 1,953 patients whose laboratory records from 1972 through 1983 at the Massachusetts Mycobacteria Reference Laboratory indicated the isolation of Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) organisms. At least one clinical specimen from each patient during this period exhibited the organism.

Acidic pH Restricts Non‐Tuberculous Mycobacteria Replication
Different nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) species display unique replication profiles in acidic pH in vitro which correlates to their replication within human macrophages. Inhibition of the acidic environments within the macrophage enhances bacterial viability emphasising the role of acidic pH during NTM infections.
