Femtosecond X-ray emission study of the spin cross-over dynamics in haem proteins

open access: yes, 2020
In haemoglobin (consisting of four globular myoglobin-like subunits), the change from the low-spin (LS) hexacoordinated haem to the high spin (HS) pentacoordinated domed form upon ligand detachment and the reverse process upon ligand binding, represent ...

Engineering tyrosine-based electron flow pathways in proteins: The case of aplysia myoglobin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Tyrosine residues can act as redox cofactors that provide an electron transfer ("hole-hopping") route that enhances the rate of ferryl heme iron reduction by externally added reductants, for example, ascorbate.

Myoglobin expression: early induction and subsequent modulation of myoglobin and myoglobin mRNA during myogenesis.

open access: yesMolecular and Cellular Biology, 1986
We showed that myoglobin gene transcription and the appearance of myoglobin occur very early in myogenesis, in both humans and mice. In contrast to the contractile protein genes, there is a subsequent increase of 50- to 100-fold in myoglobin mRNA and protein levels during later muscle development.

Comparison of Creatine Kinase Activity and Myoglobin Blood Level in Acute Myocardial Infarction Patients

open access: yesBiomolecules & Biomedicine, 2008
The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate and compare the relative increase of serum myoglobin level and total creatine kinase(CK) activity in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients (n=36). We measured serial changes in total CK activity and

Solvent-induced organization: A physical model of folding myoglobin

open access: yes, 1994
The essential features of the in vitro refolding of myoglobin are expressed in a solvable physical model. Alpha helices are taken as the fundamental collective coordinates of the system, while the refolding is assumed to be mainly driven by solvent ...

Myoglobin modulates the Hippo pathway to promote cardiomyocyte differentiation

open access: yesiScience
Summary: The endogenous mechanisms that propagate cardiomyocyte differentiation and prevent de-differentiation remain unclear. While the expression of the heme protein myoglobin increases by over 50% during cardiomyocyte differentiation, a role for ...

Estimated glomerular filtration rate is a poor predictor of the concentration of middle molecular weight uremic solutes in chronic kidney disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Background: Uremic solute concentration increases as Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) declines. Weak associations were demonstrated between estimated GFR (eGFR) and the concentrations of several small water-soluble and protein-bound uremic solutes ...

Serum Myoglobin Is Associated With Postoperative Acute Kidney Injury in Stanford Type A Aortic Dissection

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine, 2022
BackgroundThe correlation between rhabdomyolysis and postoperative acute kidney injury has been reported in several surgical procedures. As a good predictor of rhabdomyolysis-related acute kidney injury, an elevated serum myoglobin level was often ...

Spectral characterisation of red pigment in Italian-type dry-cured ham. Increasing lipophilicity druing processing and maturation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Spectroscopic studies of Parma ham during processing revealed a gradual transformation of muscle myoglobin, initiated by salting and continuing during ageing.

Biosensors for cardiac biomarkers detection: a review [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The cardiovascular disease (CVD) is considered as a major threat to global health. Therefore, there is a growing demand for a range of portable, rapid and low cost biosensing devices for the detection of CVD.
