The South African and Namibian Populations of the Resurrection Plant Myrothamnus flabellifolius are Genetically Distinct and Display Variation in Their Galloylquinic Acid Composition

open access: closedJournal of Chemical Ecology, 2005
The polyphenol contents and compositions in desiccated leaves of Myrothamnus flabellifolius plants collected in various locations in Namibia and South Africa were analyzed using UV spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. A study of the genetic relatedness of these populations was also performed by determination of the

Towards an understanding of the mechanisms of desiccation tolerance in Myrothamnus flabellifolius (WELW.)

open access: green, 1998
To date, most of the studies on the homoiochlorophyllous desiccation-tolerant (HDT) plant Myrothamnus flabellifolius have been conducted on excised twigs or leaves. In this study drying (including prolonged exposure to the dry state), and recovery of whole plants was compared with that of detached twigs dried off the plant, and also with twigs excised ...

Benefit sharing and environmental sustainability in policy and practice: the commercialisation of the resurrection bush (Myrothamnus flabellifolius) in Southern Africa

open access: green, 2019
The trade of non-timber forest products (NTFPs), also known as biotrade, has existed for hundreds of years - as has the traditional knowledge associated with such products. More recently, this form of trade has advanced to include genetic resource components found within natural resources (bioprospecting).

Variability in Functional Traits along an Environmental Gradient in the South African Resurrection Plant Myrothamnus flabellifolia. [PDF]

open access: yesPlants (Basel), 2022
Many desiccation-tolerant plants are widely distributed and exposed to substantial environmental variation across their native range. These environmental differences generate site-specific selective pressures that could drive natural variation in ...

Microbial survival strategies in desiccated roots of Myrothamnus flabellifolia. [PDF]

open access: yesFront Microbiol
IntroductionRoot-associated microbiomes are critical to plant vigor, particularly under drought stress. The spatial dynamics of microbial community diversity and composition are strongly influenced by plant root and environmental factors.

The trehalose 6‐phosphate phosphatase family in plants

open access: yesPhysiologia Plantarum, Volume 175, Issue 6, November/December 2023., 2023
Abstract Trehalose 6‐phosphate (Tre6P), the intermediate of trehalose biosynthesis, is an essential signalling metabolite linking plant growth and development to carbon metabolism. While recent work has focused predominantly on the enzymes that produce Tre6P, little is known about the proteins that catalyse its degradation, the trehalose 6‐phosphate ...

Temporal cell wall changes during cold acclimation and deacclimation and their potential involvement in freezing tolerance and growth

open access: yesPhysiologia Plantarum, Volume 175, Issue 1, January/February 2023., 2023
Abstract Plants adapt to freezing stress through cold acclimation, which is induced by nonfreezing low temperatures and accompanied by growth arrest. A later increase in temperature after cold acclimation leads to rapid loss of freezing tolerance and growth resumption, a process called deacclimation.

In-vitro assessment of the efficacy of herb-herb combinations against multidrug-resistant mastitis-causing bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae

open access: yesCogent Food & Agriculture, 2023
The threat of antibiotic resistance and the antecedent evolution of harmless microbes into superbugs is an epidemic of global concern. This study assessed the in-vitro herb to herb antibacterial activity of acetone, methanol, and water extracts of ...
