Pharmacogenomics of Hypertension in Africa: Paving the Way for a Pharmacogenetic‐Based Approach for the Treatment of Hypertension in Africans

open access: yesInternational Journal of Hypertension, Volume 2023, Issue 1, 2023., 2023
In Africa, the burden of hypertension has been rising at an alarming rate for the last two decades and is a major cause for cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and morbidity. Hypertension is characterised by elevated blood pressure (BP) ≥ 140/90 mmHg.

Mitochondrial activity and biogenesis during resurrection of Haberlea rhodopensis

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 236, Issue 3, Page 943-957, November 2022., 2022
Summary Haberlea rhodopensis is a resurrection plant that can tolerate extreme and prolonged periods of desiccation with a rapid restoration of physiological function upon rehydration. Specialized mechanisms are required to minimize cellular damage during desiccation and to maintain integrity for rapid recovery following rehydration.

A new, simple, highly scalable, and efficient protocol for genomic DNA extraction from diverse plant taxa

open access: yesApplications in Plant Sciences, Volume 9, Issue 3, March 2021., 2021
Premise Commonly used molecular techniques such as next‐generation sequencing require reliable methods to extract DNA quickly and efficiently. Secondary compounds within plant tissues make this requirement all the more challenging, often forcing researchers to test different extraction methods tailored to their particular species of interest in order ...

Anti-amoebic effects of selected herbal extracts against Acanthamoeba species isolated from different borehole water samples from Budiriro District in Harare, Zimbabwe

open access: yesInfectious Diseases and Herbal Medicine
Acanthamoeba species are the major cause of Acanthamoeba Keratitis (AK) of eyes, Acanthamoeba meningoencephalitis of the central nervous system, and fatal Granulomatous Amoebic Encephalitis (GAE) of the brain in humans.

A field portable method for the semi-quantitative estimation of dehydration tolerance of photosynthetic tissues across distantly related land plants. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Preprint sustituido por postprint 9-12-2019Desiccation tolerant (DT) plants withstand complete cellular dehydration (reaching relative water contents below 30% in their photosynthetic tissues), while desiccation sensitive (DS) plants exhibit different ...

Protection mechanisms against excess light in Myrothamnus flabellifolius (Welw.) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
The effects of light stress during drying on excised twigs of the homoiochlorophyllous resurrection plant Myrothamnus flabellifoius, was examined in this study. Leaves were prevented from folding during drying and plants were dried in the light, and as a

The trehalose 6‐phosphate pathway impacts vegetative phase change in Arabidopsis thaliana

open access: yesThe Plant Journal, Volume 104, Issue 3, Page 768-780, November 2020., 2020
Summary The vegetative phase change marks the beginning of the adult phase in the life cycle of plants and is associated with a gradual decline in the microRNA miR156, in response to sucrose status. Trehalose 6‐phosphate (T6P) is a sugar molecule with signaling function reporting the current sucrose state.

Analysis of Land Cover Changes in Afromontane Vegetation of Image Forest Reserve, Southern Highlands of Tanzania

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, Volume 2020, Issue 1, 2020., 2020
An analysis of land cover changes (LCCs) was done in Image Forest Reserve (IFR) from August to October 2019. Free satellite images for 1990, 2004, and 2018 were downloaded from Landsat 5 (TM) and Landsat 8 (OLI) available through the USGS portal. Ground surveys were conducted using systematically set plots of 20 m × 40 m to identify the existing land ...

The complex cell wall composition of syncytia induced by plant parasitic cyst nematodes reflects both function and host plant [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Plant–parasitic cyst nematodes induce the formation of specialised feeding structures, syncytia, within their host roots. These unique plant organs serve as the sole nutrient resource for development and reproduction throughout the biotrophic interaction.
