Remythologizing Mystery in Mathematics: Teaching for Open Landscapes versus Concealment

open access: yesEducation Sciences, 2018
Mathematics is full of mystery. We illuminate the myth to expose two conflicting senses of mystery at work in mathematics and its education practices. There is a sense of boundlessness with mathematics—the idea that we never fully know.

ATP13A2 is involved in intracellular polyamine transport in lung epithelial cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Spermidine transport in lung epithelial cells involves the polyamine transporter ATP13A2. Cell proliferation is associated with the upregulation of ATP13A2. Polyamines are present in all living cells and are implicated in various crucial cellular processes such as proliferation, apoptosis and autophagy.

C2α‐carbanion‐protonating glutamate discloses tradeoffs between substrate accommodation and reaction rate in actinobacterial 2‐hydroxyacyl‐CoA lyase

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Enzymes of the 2‐hydroxyacyl‐CoA lyase group catalyze the condensation of formyl‐CoA with aldehydes or ketones. Thus, by structural adaptation of active sites, practically any pharmaceutically and industrially important 2‐hydroxyacid could be biotechnologically synthesized. Combining crystal structure analysis, active site mutations and kinetic assays,
