Towards a More Nuanced Understanding of Long‐Distance Rafting: Case Studies From the Southern Ocean

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Biogeography, Volume 34, Issue 2, February 2025.
ABSTRACT Problem Rafting is now recognised as a key process influencing the distribution and connectivity of several marine and coastal species. Rafting scenarios are, however, often invoked in ways that do not account for clear differences in biogeographic outcomes. Here, we illustrate the value of utilising multiple lines of evidence (e.g.

Key benthic species are affected by predicted warming in winter but show resistance to ocean acidification

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 9, September 2024.
We identified the effects of ocean warming in winter on mussels and algae and found evidence of resistance to acidification. We also discovered a mutually facilitative interaction between mussels and algae that was robust to changing environmental conditions.

A review on green‐lipped mussel, Perna canaliculus immunology: the drivers, virulence factors, advances, and applications

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research, Volume 58, Issue 3, Page 319-363, September 2024.
ABSTRACT The endemic, green‐lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus), trademarked as Greenshell™ mussel, contributes most to the New Zealand aquaculture industry based on tonnage and export value. Research on mussel immunity is motivated greatly by economical and biosecurity necessities.

The temperate marine Peruvian Province: How history accounts for its unusual biota

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 7, July 2024.
Among extant temperate marine biotas, the Peruvian Province is highly unusual in, among other traits, a very high incidence of limpets, gastropods with a labral tooth (to assist in predation), a reversed latitudinal diversity gradient, and the absence of several ecological guilds.

Production and performance of larvae and spat of pure and hybrid species of Mytilus chilensis and M. galloprovincialis from laboratory crosses Producción y comportamiento de larvas de especies puras e híbridas entre Mytilus chilensis y Mytilus galloprovincialis obtenidas en laboratorio

open access: yesLatin American Journal of Aquatic Research, 2012
Adult specimens of M. galloprovincialis from Concepción Bay and M. chilensis from Yaldad Bay, Chile, were transferred to the laboratory to produce crosses of "pure" and "hybrid" species in order to evaluate early larval development and growth.

Combined effects of temperature and ocean acidification on the juvenile individuals of the mussel Mytilus chilensis

open access: yesJournal of Sea Research, 2014
Abstract Anthropogenic CO 2 emissions have led to increasing global mean temperatures (a process called global warming) and ocean acidification. Because both processes are occurring simultaneously, to better understand their consequences on marine species their combined effects must be experimentally evaluated.

Wet, dry and ash free dry mass in relation to length of the Mytilidae Aulacomya atra and Mytilus chilensis from the fjord Comau, Chile, 2012

open access: yes, 2012
Total wet mass (WM), dry mass (DM) and ash free dry mass (AFDM) were determined for specimens from Station 1 (X-Huinay) covering the entire size range of Aulacomya atra and Mytilus chilensis.

Identifying marine invasion threats and management priorities through introduction pathway analysis in a remote sub‐Antarctic ecosystem

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 4, April 2024.
South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) currently has only one documented established non‐native species. However, the combination of a rapidly changing climate and an increase in tourism activities make these previously isolated islands now at risk, and in need of evidence‐based knowledge of key locations and vectors for assessing ...
